William Jensen and Helmer Ewert Master Diverse Formats at Blind and Fun in Landvetter 2024English
William Jensen delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend at Landvetter Kulturhus by capturing four separate titles, capped by a commanding 42.27 single to win 3x3x3 Blindfolded across two rounds. The single-day tournament on April 13, 2024, brought together 46 competitors for an ambitious schedule that celebrated the sheer mechanical variety of modern speedcubing. Across eight distinct events and nine rounds, the roster spanned everything from lightning-fast twists on the Pyraminx to the grueling mental endurance demanded by multi-cube blindfolded disciplines in Landvetter, Sweden.
The distinctive schedule at Blind and Fun in Landvetter 2024 challenged participants to switch rapidly between wildly different puzzle types and formats. Beyond the traditional cubic geometry, solvers grappled with the corner-turning mechanics of the Skewb and the tetrahedral shape of the Pyraminx, while also testing their memory against blindfolded big cubes. Having such diverse disciplines under one roof gave the cubing competition a dynamic rhythm, requiring athletes to toggle between rapid fingertip dexterity and silent, motionless memorisation phases throughout the busy single day of action.
In the classic 3x3x3 Cube, Emanuel Schelin took top honours with an exceptional 7.33 winning average and the best single of the day at 6.00 among 44 competitors. The 3x3 results saw Schelin outpace Jensen, who finished in second place with an average of 8.02, while Helmer Ewert rounded out the podium in third with an 8.82 mark. The flagship Rubik's Cube category served as a vibrant showcase of raw turning speed, providing a sharp contrast to the intricate memory disciplines that followed later on the schedule.
Jensen dominated the shorter events, proving his versatility by securing victories in both Pyraminx and Skewb alongside his blindfolded success. He captured the Pyraminx title with a 2.79 winning average and a 1.63 best single over 37 competitors, besting Bosse Schelander's 4.14 average and Ewert's 5.21. In Skewb, Jensen led a field of 33 solvers with a 3.19 winning average, followed by Ewert in second at 4.12 and Elvin Eriksson in third at 5.01. Jensen also triumphed in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 1.84 average, ahead of Ronnie Jinxuan Zhu with 1.93 and Ewert with 2.59.
The blindfolded categories demanded supreme concentration, and Helmer Ewert stepped into the spotlight by taking two major gold medals. In 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, Ewert successfully resolved 15 out of 19 cubes in exactly 1:00:00 to lead a 16-competitor field, finishing ahead of Viktor Zenk, who tallied 14 of 18 in 57:33, and Igor Pertoso Lazdan with 16 of 25 in 1:00:00. Ewert then secured the 5x5x5 Blindfolded victory as the sole finisher on the podium with a 14:07.00 single, while Eskil Munthe claimed the 4x4x4 Blindfolded crown in 6:07.04 ahead of Ewert's 7:03.39.
Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across the diverse schedule. Eric von Boisman entered four events, logging his first ever attempt at Skewb with a time of 29.80, lowering his Pyraminx mark to 24.73, and slicing his 2x2x2 Cube personal best down to 22.13, which was 61.2% faster than his previous standard. Kevin Xu focused on the 3x3x3 Cube, where an improved 38.45 result was 56.3% faster than before. Antonio Nilsson competed in four categories, cutting his Skewb best to 14.17 for a 50.9% improvement and setting a Pyraminx personal best of 13.84, which was 30.6% faster. Vilmer Wallin took on four disciplines, taking 40.2% off his Skewb best with a 5.78, dropping 19.9% on Pyraminx to 8.56, and lowering his 3x3x3 mark to 14.96.
The personal breakthroughs continued across the full spectrum of puzzles. Alve Dencker tackled four events, producing a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 3.10 that was 38.4% faster, alongside a 26.5% reduction in 3x3x3 to 15.27 and an 8.90 in Pyraminx. Andreas Bygdell took on three events, posting his first ever Skewb attempt with a 13.83, while trimming his Pyraminx best by 30.2% down to 10.62 and improving his 3x3x3 time to 53.84. Joar Rudebeck recorded his first ever attempt at Skewb with a 10.02 and achieved a 26.5% improvement in Pyraminx with a time of 7.16, achieving a weekend-best 20th place finish. Hjalmar Wallin logged his first attempt at Pyraminx with a 20.45 and improved his 3x3x3 mark by 18.6% to 1:00.08.
The international spread saw podium honours distributed across three nations, with host country Sweden securing 24 placements, Canada claiming two, and China taking one. For the local speed cubing community in Landvetter, the one-day gathering proved that a compact venue could easily sustain high-level competition across drastically varied formats. Solvers pushed their capabilities across non-cubic mechanisms and memory-intensive solves alike, highlighting the rich breadth of the modern WCA competition circuit.
When the final timers stopped, Blind and Fun in Landvetter 2024 stood as a testament to the versatility of today's speedcubers. From the explosive speed of the 2x2x2 Cube and Pyraminx rounds to the hour-long psychological endurance test of multi-blind solving, the competition showcased the full range of puzzle disciplines in 2024. As competitors packed up their cubes and headed home from Landvetter Kulturhus, the tournament highlighted how many ways a single event can test spatial awareness, quick hands, and sheer mental grit.
