A Classic Swedish Showdown Decided by Four Hundredths at Björneborg Winter 2023English
A mere four hundredths of a second separated the top two solvers on the main stage as Daniel Wallin edged out Jack Larsson Backsell in an extraordinary 3x3x3 Cube final. Wallin produced a winning average of 8.59 seconds across five solves, narrowly holding off Backsell's 8.63 average in the signature event. Helmer Ewert completed the podium with a steady 9.06 average, sealing a thrilling finish between Sweden's top talents. That razor-thin margin set the tone for the entire weekend, showing how intense the fight for supremacy can be at a tight regional meeting.
Held on December 2 and 3, Björneborg Winter 2023 brought together a focused field of 11 competitors at Björneborg Folkets Hus och Park in Björneborg, Sweden. The two-day cubing competition featured a dense schedule of 12 distinct events spread over 23 rounds of action. With all 36 podium places captured by Swedish competitors, the gathering served as an all-domestic arena where seasoned regional rivals battled through every twist and turn for national bragging rights in the 2023 speedcubing calendar.
The ongoing rivalry between Backsell and Wallin carried directly into the larger cube categories, where Backsell answered back with absolute dominance. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Backsell secured the top spot with a 31.24 average, besting Wallin's 31.40 in another nail-biting finish while Ewert followed in third at 34.21. Moving up through the big cubes, Backsell extended his command by sweeping the 5x5x5 Cube in 52.39, the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:44.96, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:43.11 average, outperforming Wallin in each of the three finals.
Backsell also proved his versatility across single-handed solving by claiming the 3x3x3 One-Handed crown. He notched a winning average of 14.46 seconds, backed by a quick single of 10.75, to lead the nine-person field. Ewert secured second place with an average of 15.92, closely followed by Wallin at 15.96 in a three-way tussle of familiar rivals. That one-handed victory brought Backsell his fifth gold medal across the weekend, cementing an exceptional performance on the heavier puzzles.
While the big cubes belonged to Backsell, Helmer Ewert carved out his own domain across the specialized disciplines. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Ewert took the gold medal with a 3.06 average to defeat Arvid Ahlstrand's 3.17 and Wallin's 4.03. Ewert doubled down on his success by taking first in the Pyraminx event with a 3.09 average, and added a third victory in Square-1 by recording a 10.09 average with a best single of 7.78 seconds, ensuring multiple titles stayed within his grasp during the competition.
Wallin countered with brilliance in the alternative formats and memory-intensive tests. In Skewb, Wallin grabbed gold with a 4.57 average, highlighted by a rapid 3.43 single. He then demonstrated absolute focus in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded round, taking first place with a single solve of 20.03 seconds. Ewert placed second in blindfolded solving at 1:01.63, while Elias Nordlund claimed third with 1:38.49. In the Clock event, Rasmus Händén broke through to take the title with a 6.50 winning average.
Away from the top of the podium, several competitors made significant personal breakthroughs that the final medal tally does not immediately show. Edward Quin took on four events over the weekend, delivering a first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube with a time of 10.68 seconds and a first ever attempt at Pyraminx in 18.07 seconds, alongside a personal best of 15.88 in Skewb that improved his previous mark by 18.8 percent. Konrad Bäck Ahlstedt entered seven events, securing a best finish of 5th in Clock and improving his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best to 50.40 seconds, an impressive 24.1 percent drop, while also trimming his Clock personal best by 9.6 percent down to 12.55 seconds.
The level of technical execution across the board showed how vibrant the speed cubing scene remains across Sweden. From the high-pressure Rubik's Cube showdowns on the main stage to the relentless test of big cubes, Björneborg Winter 2023 highlighted how intense regional competition sharpens the skills of every solver involved. The memorable 3x3 results and balanced spread of titles demonstrated that Swedish speedcubing enters the next season on solid, competitive ground.

Blindlösning kräver en enorm minneskapacitet och förmåga att visualisera kuben utan att se den, då varje drag måste sitta i muskelminnet efter memoreringen.
