Memory and Big Cubes Collide at Big SolleNxNxNtuna 2023 in SwedenEnglish
Inside Arena Satelliten, the ambient hum of turning layers dropped to an absolute hush whenever blindfolds were pulled into place. Competitors sat motionless across the solving tables, heads tilted in intense concentration as they studied complex permutations before slipping on their blindfolds to execute intricate solutions purely from memory. Speedcubing always demands sharp spatial awareness, but the atmosphere at this gathering centered heavily on the mental stamina needed to solve large multi-layered puzzles without sight, creating a uniquely focused environment.
Held on September 17, 2023, the Big SolleNxNxNtuna 2023 brought together 20 dedicated puzzle handlers in Sollentuna, Sweden. This specialized cubing competition gave competitors an intensive slate spanning 6 events and 15 rounds. Unlike a standard stop that revolves heavily around traditional 3x3 results, this single-day meeting put big cubes and blindfolded disciplines at the forefront. Participants from Sweden, Germany, and Switzerland gathered to push their limits across demanding formats that tested memory just as much as manual turning speed.
The blindfolded events proved especially dramatic, requiring flawless memory and execution. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded discipline, Daniel Wallin of Sweden stood alone at the top of the podium with a winning single time of 2:26.82, navigating two challenging rounds against 8 competitors to secure the gold. The 5x5x5 Blindfolded contest pushed memory limits even further. Wallin once again captured victory, posting a best single of 3:50.20 to take first place ahead of Switzerland representative Fabian Settelen, who finished second with a time of 19:55.00.
In the sighted big puzzle showdowns, Alexander Botz delivered an exceptional showing across multiple finals. The German competitor captured two victories, winning the 5x5x5 Cube final with an average of 58.09 seconds and a best single of 55.64. Botz doubled his title count in the 7x7x7 Cube, posting an average of 2:31.26 to edge out Alvar Nylén of Sweden, who finished second in 2:32.86. Sweden competitor Joel Lundström took third in both events, logging 1:02.69 on the 5x5x5 and 2:54.72 on the 7x7x7.
Beyond the podium battles, several competitors produced notable personal milestones throughout the day. Björn Arvidsson tackled four separate events, logging a 12.5 percent improvement in 4x4x4 Cube with a personal best of 48.50, shaving 22.9 percent off his 7x7x7 Cube best to reach 3:58.54, and completing his first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 2:55.95. Tom Lundborg registered his first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube with a 10:18.00 result, took on his first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 4:25.03, and dropped his 4x4x4 Cube mark by 14.4 percent to 39.37. Lukas Brandberg entered four events, posting his first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube in 8:03.82, a 5x5x5 Cube best of 2:43.18, and a 22.8 percent reduction on 4x4x4 Cube with a new personal best of 1:19.18.
The surge of personal achievements continued with three more standout performers across the schedule. Edvin Andersson stepped up for a single event and completed his first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 8:46.77. Paul Holtfrerich took on four events, dropping his 6x6x6 Cube time by 8.1 percent to 2:29.58 and trimming 11.5 percent from his 7x7x7 Cube mark to register 4:54.34. Tatu Lehtilä also entered four events, recording an 8.6 percent improvement on the 7x7x7 Cube with 5:24.53 and an impressive 22.3 percent cut on the 6x6x6 Cube to log a new personal best of 3:45.46.
The 6x6x6 Cube provided one of the fastest finals of the day, with Alvar Nylén securing first place on an average of 1:38.89 and a round-best single of 1:36.09. Alexander Botz followed in second position with an average of 1:47.11, while Daniel Wallin rounded out the podium in third place at 2:02.04. The 4x4x4 Cube concluded with Govend Avgerinos Djangoi winning the event on an average of 31.95 seconds and a single of 26.06. Wallin finished runner-up at 34.77, just ahead of Botz at 35.65.
Over the course of the day, podium places were shared across three nations, with Swedish competitors taking 11 spots, German solvers earning 5, and Switzerland securing 1. Solvers across every division demonstrated the depth of modern speed cubing, applying advanced algorithms and meticulous preparation to master puzzles far larger than the classic Rubik's Cube. The successful execution of 15 rounds across six events highlighted the high level of discipline present in this specialized WCA competition.
As the final timers were cleared at Big SolleNxNxNtuna 2023, the gathering underscored the unique combination of physical speed and mental recall that defines elite cubing. From the quiet tension of the blindfolded attempts to the fast-paced turns of the 4x4x4 through 7x7x7 finals, competitors in Sollentuna delivered memorable performances to close out an intense day of high-level solving.
