Big n BLD Finprov 2024 Brings Big Cubes and Blindfold Battles to KeralaEnglish

Fifteen competitors stepped forward on April 7, 2024, to take on some of the most demanding disciplines in speedcubing at the Finprov Learning Centre. Hosted in Alappuzha, Kerala, India, the compact single-day gathering brought together specialists focused exclusively on large twisty puzzles and blindfolded solving. Across seven events and eight rounds of intense play, the atmosphere rewarded precision, endurance, and memory. The focused field size gave rising talents and seasoned competitors plenty of room to test their limits.

The opening event schedule placed an immediate spotlight on big puzzle dexterity. Likhith Siddhartha Kathula emerged as the standout performer of the entire competition, sweeping through every standard big cube category. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Kathula logged a winning average of 42.76 seconds, edging out Sulaiman Mohammed Kabeer who registered an average of 42.80 seconds in an extraordinarily narrow finish. Shaun Shibu claimed third place on the podium with an average of 45.18 seconds, while Kathula also captured the single round best time of 37.87 seconds.

Kathula continued his relentless momentum into the 5x5x5 Cube, where 12 solvers contested a single deciding round. Kathula secured victory with an average of 1:24.34, bolstered by a best single of 1:17.43. Shaun Shibu earned second place with a mark of 1:29.02, while Sulaiman Mohammed Kabeer took third at 1:31.26. The technical complexity of larger hardware did nothing to slow Kathula, who turned the multi-layered puzzles into a showcase of fluent handling throughout the day.

The upper register of puzzle sizes saw Kathula cement his dominance. In the 6x6x6 Cube, he took the top step of the podium with a 2:02.47 average and a 1:53.04 single, finishing ahead of Safvan Kadannam Potta who logged 2:46.47, and Shaun Shibu in third at 2:58.96. Kathula then closed out the 7x7x7 Cube with a gold-medal average of 3:51.94, supported by a 3:43.90 single. Safvan Kadannam Potta claimed runner-up status in 4:22.63, followed by Shaun Shibu in 4:44.89 to complete an identical podium roster.

Blindfolded solving added a distinctly cerebral layer to the action at Big n BLD Finprov 2024. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, which ran across two rounds for eight contenders, Ritesh R Nair took the title with a winning single solve of 2:17.79. Swaminathan Chandrasekaran claimed the runner-up position with a time of 2:56.04, while Sachin Arvind secured third place in 5:55.54. Without standard 3x3 results on offer, the pure memory discipline held centre stage as solvers relied completely on spatial orientation and recall.

Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across their scheduled events. Pranav R. Mallya tackled four events and delivered a career highlight by finishing fourth in the 7x7x7 Cube with a first ever attempt of 5:15.07, alongside a 5x5x5 Cube personal best of 1:53.41 that shaved 40.4 percent off his previous benchmark, and a 4x4x4 Cube personal best of 52.14 seconds. Sanjay Kumar entered four disciplines, taking sixth in the 7x7x7 Cube with a personal best of 6:03.89 and setting a 4x4x4 Cube best of 1:06.55. Vikram Gopinath took on three events, taking fourth in 3x3x3 Blindfolded and completing a first ever attempt at the 5x5x5 Cube in 5:34.88.

The specialised blindfold program at Big n BLD Finprov 2024 wrapped up with high-stakes tests in multi-blind and large-cube blindfolded solving. In 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, Swaminathan Chandrasekaran achieved top honours by successfully solving 2 out of 3 cubes in 16:55. Shaun Shibu secured second place with 2 out of 3 in 18:26. The 4x4x4 Blindfolded event proved unforgiving for its three entrants, as Muhammed Ameen, Shaun Shibu, and Sulaiman Mohammed Kabeer all recorded DNF outcomes, illustrating the unforgiving nature of blindfold calculation.

The single-day program demonstrated the distinct appeal of non-traditional formats in speed cubing. By stripping away standard handheld speed categories in favour of complex multi-layered puzzles and blindfolded solving, the WCA competition offered an intense proving ground for all 15 entrants. Every podium finish was claimed by representatives of India, highlighting the depth of talent operating within the regional Rubik's Cube community in Alappuzha.

As the final timers stopped, Big n BLD Finprov 2024 delivered a memorable chapter for speedcubing enthusiasts in the region. Between Kathula sweeping all four big cube divisions and the blindfolded specialists executing complex memory routines under pressure, the event pushed competitors to their absolute technical limits. With personal bests tumbling and new event debuts successfully recorded, the participants leave Kerala with valuable experience for the upcoming competitive calendar.
