Big Cubes Sofia 2024 Delivers Masterclass in Heavy Puzzles Across Two DaysEnglish
Thirty-five competitors assembled at the Technical University of Sofia on February 24, 2024, setting the stage for a weekend devoted entirely to large puzzles and complex geometry. Over two intensive days through February 25, the schedule packed thirteen rounds of play across five distinct disciplines. Rather than searching for standard 3x3 results, participants and spectators turned their full focus toward the ultimate tests of endurance and precision in Sofia, Bulgaria. The atmosphere reflected the distinct character of big-cube speedcubing, where stamina matters as much as raw turning speed.
Saturday opened with qualifying heats that tested solving efficiency across multi-layered hardware. The initial rounds of the 4x4x4 Cube set a blistering pace for the cubing competition, drawing thirty-three entrants into a three-round progression. Early rounds rewarded smooth transitions and consistent edge pairing, establishing the baseline for what would become an exceptionally competitive weekend. Solvers spent the opening day establishing their rhythm across extended puzzle sessions, navigating complex parities while positioning themselves for Sunday finals.
Kaloyan Galabinov took firm command of the largest puzzles on the schedule as the weekend progressed, demonstrating remarkable consistency across multiple rounds. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Galabinov captured the title with a winning average of 3:31.01 and a best single time of 3:24.84, finishing ahead of Emil Todorov Iliev at 3:38.11 and Ognian Baruh at 4:14.42. Galabinov mirrored that mastery in the 6x6x6 Cube, securing victory with a 2:04.94 average and a 2:01.02 single, while Baruh took second with 2:38.08 and Iliev claimed third in 2:39.56.
The 5x5x5 Cube final continued Galabinov's dominant run through the heavy divisions. He secured his third individual gold of the WCA competition with an average of 1:11.10 and an event-best single of 1:03.81. Baruh took the silver medal with an average of 1:17.53, followed closely by Alexander Tenev in third place at 1:18.26. The technical discipline required to manage piece reduction on such large Rubik's Cube variants defined the upper tier of the standings.
Beyond the podium battles, several solvers achieved major breakthroughs that highlighted the depth of the field. Velin Doychev authored one of the steepest progressions of the weekend, slashing his 4x4x4 Cube personal best by 60.8 percent down to 47.22 seconds and taking on his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a mark of 1:29.34 for a sixth-place finish. Konstantin Dimitrov tackled five events, delivering a first ever attempt at Megaminx in 1:48.12, a debut 6x6x6 Cube mark of 4:46.94 to finish eighth, and improving his 5x5x5 Cube personal best by 30.8 percent to 1:48.96. Yana Stoyanova Petrova took on three events, logging first ever attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 1:44.33, 5x5x5 Cube at 2:38.97, and Megaminx at 2:40.49.
That spirit of personal growth resonated across the scoreboards. Martin Kolmakov registered a career-best fourth-place finish in Megaminx, logging a first attempt of 1:32.84, while adding a debut 7x7x7 Cube result of 5:19.65 and improving his 4x4x4 Cube best by 12.1 percent to 44.00 seconds. Vladimir Stoimenov achieved an eighth-place finish in Megaminx on a first ever attempt of 1:50.64 alongside a 26.1 percent drop in his 4x4x4 Cube best to 1:00.89. Kristian Atanasov entered four events, posting an initial Megaminx time of 1:48.33 for seventh place, a first 6x6x6 Cube mark of 6:45.00, and a 9.4 percent improvement on 5x5x5 Cube to 2:32.00. Kaloyan Petrov completed a debut Megaminx run in 2:44.55 and bettered his 4x4x4 Cube personal mark by 25.7 percent to 1:31.67.
Alexander Tenev delivered standout performances of his own to claim two major titles across the weekend schedule. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Tenev captured the gold medal with a final winning average of 37.81 and a best single of 35.32, topping a competitive podium where Galabinov took second with 40.85 and Baruh secured third with 41.87. Tenev also led the field in Megaminx, winning the twelve-sided event with a 1:17.41 average and a 1:08.03 single, outlasting Victor Hadzhibeev in second at 1:20.85 and Galabinov in third at 1:30.89.
The concluding sessions brought an intense showcase of Bulgarian speed cubing skill, with local competitors sweeping all fifteen available podium spots across the five contested events. Big Cubes Sofia 2024 provided a dedicated stage for long-form solving formats, highlighting technical mastery across complex mechanisms and rewarding athletes who embraced the physical demands of big-cube racing. As the technical apparatus was packed away at the university, Big Cubes Sofia 2024 stood as a benchmark for heavy-puzzle excellence and personal achievement.
