Bereczki Dominates at Liceul Teoretic Alexandru Ioan Cuza in BucharestEnglish

Twenty-eight competitors gathered at Liceul Teoretic Alexandru Ioan Cuza on January 7, 2023, as the school hall provided a focused setting for the year's opening test of stamina and precision. The venue inside Bucharest, Romania, filled with the rhythmic click of oversized puzzles as Big Cubes Bucharest 2023 got underway. Across eight rounds of intense competition, the atmosphere remained sharp and determined, with participants leaning over tables to tackle some of the most complex twisty puzzles in modern speedcubing.

The single-day WCA competition brought together an eager field ready to challenge four demanding events. While traditional Rubik's Cube events often emphasize short sprints, this gathering centered heavily on the endurance and mental discipline required for the larger NxN mechanisms. From the early stages of the morning, the energy in the room reflected the technical demands of high-order layers, where smooth turns and consistent pacing made all the difference under tournament pressure.

János Bereczki delivered an exceptional performance across the major puzzle events, capturing first place in every big cube discipline on the schedule. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Bereczki led the 28-competitor field through two rounds, posting a winning average of 44.26 seconds alongside the tournament's fastest single solve of 39.55 seconds. Martin Fronescu secured second place with an average of 1:02.15, while Vincenzo Maria Gammino took third place with 1:13.28 to complete an impressive podium.

Bereczki maintained his winning form in the 6x6x6 Cube, where 21 competitors tested their hardware and endurance across two rounds. Recording a winning average of 1:19.99 and a best single solve of 1:19.26, Bereczki once again stood atop the podium. Fronescu finished as the runner-up with an average of 2:03.17, edging Gammino, who captured third place with a solid mark of 2:03.57 in an exceptionally close finish between the two podium contenders.

The 7x7x7 Cube final concluded the big cube sweep for Bereczki, who navigated two rounds against 15 competitors to post a winning average of 2:01.91. His best single mark of 1:56.42 set the benchmark for the event at Big Cubes Bucharest 2023. Gammino climbed to the second step of the podium with an average of 2:53.39, while Fronescu earned third place with a time of 3:07.53, ending a grueling sequence of big cube rounds.
