Maxime Madrzyk Clinches Blindfolded Gold as Belgian Nationals 2025 Lights Up HasseltEnglish
In an event defined by total sensory deprivation and absolute spatial recall, Maxime Madrzyk delivered the most captivating single performance of the weekend at Hogeschool PXL. Competing against 34 specialists in the 3x3x3 blindfolded event, the French solver conquered the classic puzzle without sight in a blistering 19.56 seconds. The discipline demands uninterrupted memorisation before donning a blindfold to execute turning sequences purely from memory, leaving no margin for hesitation. Olivier Vos of the Netherlands took the second step on the podium with a 21.73 single, while Belgium's own Corentin Thomée secured third place with a solid 32.44.
The blindfolded drama set the tone for Belgian Nationals 2025, held on November 22 and 23 in Hasselt, Belgium. Across two intense days of speedcubing, a turnout of 192 competitors gathered to contest 13 events spanning 21 total rounds. Solvers converged on the Limburg province venue for a major WCA competition that tested versatility across varied formats, ranging from intricate turning puzzles to large-order cubes. The tournament assembled international challengers alongside top domestic talent, producing high-level speed cubing battles from the first preliminary heats on Saturday morning to the closing finals on Sunday.
Patrick Ponce of the United States produced a dominant run across multiple categories, capturing titles in six different events. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube contest, which drew a massive field of 182 entrants over three rounds, Ponce prevailed with a world-class winning average of 5.92 seconds after posting a best single of 5.59. The Netherlands' Antonie Paterakis took runner-up honours with a 6.64 average, while Imanuel Müller of Germany earned third place with 7.15. These decisive 3x3 results confirmed Ponce's sharp form in Hasselt as he spearheaded the international medal tally.
Ponce continued his commanding march through the larger twisty puzzles and specialized formats. He claimed the 4x4x4 Cube crown with a 21.51 average, defeating Dutch finalists Mika Smulders and Robin Teune, who registered 27.26 and 28.21 respectively. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed division, Ponce topped a field of 88 solvers with a 9.51 average. His superiority across the big cubes remained unchallenged, sweeping the 5x5x5 Cube with a 45.32 average, the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:31.58, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:15.09 average ahead of Robin Teune's 2:33.67 and Belgian finalist Matthias Schegers's 2:42.64.
Beyond the fight for trophies, the cubing competition served as a proving ground for several competitors making remarkable strides in their official development. Justys van der Beek of the Netherlands delivered huge personal bests across multiple categories, shaving off crucial seconds with a 3.18 in Skewb, which was 56.4 percent faster than their prior mark of 7.29, alongside an 18.69 in 3x3x3 One-Handed, a 49.8 percent improvement on their earlier 37.26 best. Van der Beek also took 12th in Clock and completed their first ever attempt at Square-1 with 34.32. Belgium's Michiel Sleurs also slashed their previous 2x2x2 Cube personal record by 52.8 percent to 4.79 seconds, down from 10.14, while logging debut tournament attempts in Pyraminx at 9.38 and Skewb at 13.08.
Other dedicated solvers embraced the challenge of expansive schedules across the weekend. Yunus Vogel of Germany tackled an impressive 11 events, securing a 41st-place finish in 7x7x7 Cube while posting debut marks of 6:54.14 on the 7x7x7, 3:47.64 on the 6x6x6, and 24.45 in Clock. Gabriel Bartholomé entered 12 events for Belgium, finishing 16th in 3x3x3 One-Handed, while logging first-ever attempts in Megaminx at 1:06.08, 6x6x6 Cube at 3:59.96, and 3x3x3 Blindfolded at 3:11.51. Eden Duquesne of Poland took on 6 events, improving their 2x2x2 personal best by 37.8 percent to 5.24 while establishing first marks in Skewb at 11.11 and Megaminx at 2:55.35. Oscar De Salle achieved a 47.5 percent Pyraminx improvement to 12.84, a 15.5 percent 3x3x3 drop to 33.50, and completed their first official 2x2x2 attempt in 11.80.
The tournament schedule also delivered fast-paced action across alternate puzzle categories. Germany's Imanuel Müller secured a pair of victories, capturing the 2x2x2 Cube with a rapid 1.51 average over 162 rivals, and taking the Megaminx title with a 40.26 average. In Pyraminx, Andrey Che stood atop a 128-competitor field with a 2.81 winning average and a 2.34 best single. Elias Malomgré kept a gold medal on home soil by winning the Skewb final with an average of 2.65, bolstered by a 0.97 single solve.
Belgian competitor Joran Pauwels enjoyed a double victory on home soil, mastering the Clock event with a 4.12 average ahead of Anthony Lafourcade's 5.93 and Müller's 5.95, while also topping the Square-1 podium in 9.08 seconds ahead of compatriot Bowen Xie's 9.27. Across all disciplines, the host nation secured a tournament-leading 10 podium positions, with the Netherlands gathering 9 and the USA and France taking 6 apiece. Belgian Nationals 2025 concluded having showcased the complete spectrum of the Rubik's Cube community, blending high-pressure blindfolded mastery with extensive multi-event success.
