Specialists Shine Across Distinct Disciplines at Basauri Open 2023English

Fifteen events filled the schedule as 56 competitors gathered at Basozelai Gizarte Etxea for Basauri Open 2023. Staged from November 3 to November 5, 2023, the gathering in Basauri, Bizkaia, Spain brought together solvers across 30 rounds of action. While the classic Rubik's Cube remained a fixture, the weekend distinguished itself through an extensive slate of niche formats, long-form puzzles, and blindfolded challenges. Speedcubing enthusiasts tackled everything from multi-cube memorisation to the geometric intricacies of the Square-1, highlighting how diverse modern competitive solving has become.

Arthur Cambon delivered one of the weekend's most demanding achievements during the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event. Facing a grueling test of recall and execution, Cambon successfully resolved 18 out of 20 cubes within a time of 55:12 to take the win. The event requires solvers to commit dozens of cube states to memory before executing the turns entirely unseen, leaving zero margin for error over nearly an hour of continuous concentration.

Arthur Garcin captured top honours in both remaining blindfolded events alongside a major victory in standard solving. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded discipline, Garcin posted a winning single mark of 3:27.97, leading a French sweep of the podium ahead of Jonathan Dammann at 5:34.88 and Wilfrid Py at 5:55.78. Garcin also claimed victory in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition with an 18.54 single, proving his versatility across complex memory solving.

Efficiency without the clock took centre stage in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, where competitors spend an hour finding the shortest sequence of turns. Pi Sevilla Hernández won the event by securing a winning single of 32 moves. Arthur Garcin and Jonathan Dammann shared second place with matching solutions of 33 moves, demonstrating how minute adjustments in move count separate the top positions in this deliberate branch of speed cubing.

Big cube mastery belonged to Zhedong Wang and Eder Olivencia González across several rounds. Wang secured two major titles by capturing the 6x6x6 Cube with a 2:19.20 average and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 3:23.63 average. Olivencia González excelled in mid-sized formats, finishing atop the 4x4x4 Cube with a 30.48 average, winning the 5x5x5 Cube in 51.68, and adding the Megaminx title with a 47.93 mark.

Beyond the podium positions, personal milestones defined the weekend for many participants across multiple categories. Alexander García Matthies took on six events and recorded a substantial improvement in Square-1, clocking 32.33 to trim 60.2 percent off a previous 1:21.18 mark, while also lowering his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 2.73. Eloy Garcia Rodriguez dropped his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 46.2 percent to 7.92 and completed a first career attempt at Skewb with a 39.23 single. Jon Alberdi Garde tackled 10 events, finishing 14th in 7x7x7 Cube while posting a 49.66 in Square-1, a 35 percent improvement, alongside a 2:35.69 personal best in 5x5x5 Cube and a first official attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 6:39.49.

Other dedicated solvers added further depth to the scoreboards. Peio Calonge Aurtenetxe took on 10 events, finishing 12th in 7x7x7 Cube, logging personal milestones with a first 6x6x6 Cube attempt of 5:04.53, a first 7x7x7 Cube single of 6:43.66, and a 58.32 best in 4x4x4 Cube. Roberto Gastón Gervasini Lois entered four events, setting debut times in Pyraminx at 10.61, Skewb at 14.52, and 2x2x2 Cube at 5.15. Jurgi García Iturrizar made a debut Square-1 attempt of 58.67 while improving his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 25.3 percent to 5.93 and registering a 19.60 personal record in 3x3x3 Cube.

The 3x3 results produced an entertaining three-round contest to conclude the weekend. Arthur Garcin earned the top step on the podium with a 10.20 winning average, supported by a 6.61 single. Sacha Hatier took second with a 10.84 average, while Alejandro Nicolay placed third at 11.22. In other side events, Nicolas Egal Castro won 2x2x2 Cube with a 3.43 average, Aratz Larruzea earned the Pyraminx title in 3.43, Jorge Orrite De Alba topped Skewb in 3.82, Alex Rosado Saez de Langarica won Clock in 8.36, and Alejandro Nicolay won Square-1 in 10.65.

Across three days of intense rotation, Basauri Open 2023 offered a complete showcase of the WCA competition catalog. Solvers from Spain secured 24 podium placements, accompanied by 17 from France and four from China. The diverse disciplines demonstrated that speedcubing success at Basozelai Gizarte Etxea was defined as much by patience, planning, and memory as it was by raw turning speed.
