Bangkok Cube Day Summer 2023

Inside Seacon Bangkae, tables hummed with continuous turning, inspection timers, and the distinct snap of plastic mechanisms resetting for another solve. A total of 169 competitors gathered in Bangkok, Thailand across April 29 to April 30 for two packed days of head-to-head solving. Across five disciplines and ten scheduled rounds, the atmosphere in the hall was driven as much by personal milestones as by the hunt for podium places in this major 2023 speedcubing fixture.

The official WCA competition schedule brought rapid times across all events, but the hallmark of Bangkok Cube Day Summer 2023 was the immense individual progress recorded down the order. The classic 3x3x3 Cube drew an expansive field of 168 participants, creating deep brackets and intense competition. Competitors pushed their technical limits across both rounds of play, turning every heat into a showcase of preparation and fine-tuned efficiency.

Leading the way across multiple categories was Natthaphat Mahtani, who captured four separate tournament titles over the weekend. In the main 3x3x3 Cube event, Mahtani secured victory with a 6.98 winning average, backed by a tournament-best 5.49 single. Asia Konvittayayotin earned the second spot on the podium with a 7.30 average, while Thada Phuenghua locked in third place with an average of 7.53 in the final round of the classic Rubik's Cube category.

Beyond the premier 3x3 results, Mahtani produced a commanding sequence of victories across alternate formats. In Skewb, Mahtani took top honors with a 4.21 average and a 3.11 single, finishing ahead of Phuenghua with 4.91 and Parist Pariyakanok with 5.89. The dodecahedral Megaminx event saw Mahtani win courtesy of a 45.85 average, outpacing Nipat Charoenpholphant with 47.69 and Konvittayayotin with 54.54. Mahtani rounded out a four-gold weekend by capturing Square-1 with a 12.47 average, edging out Anukun Supcharoenkun with 12.65 and Pariyakanok with 13.31.

The lone individual title to escape Mahtani went to Clock, where Prin Kijviwattanakarn claimed victory with a sharp 7.07 average and a 6.19 single across two rounds featuring 53 entrants. Atis Prasitvatanakul followed in second place with a 7.77 average, while Anawin Chaichana secured third place on the podium with an 8.17 mark. The precise, dial-based event added great variety to a bustling speed cubing program.

Behind the top steps of the podium, significant breakthroughs defined the tournament experience for several dedicated competitors. Thanapat Yaotak took on four events, securing an 11th-place finish in 3x3x3 Cube, recording first official attempts of 18.99 in Clock and 2:51.17 in Megaminx, alongside a Skewb personal best of 6.45 that shaved 58 percent off an earlier 15.36 mark. Vorapon Tuntoolavest tackled four events, setting an initial Clock benchmark of 18.44, improving their 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 13.7 percent to 22.89, and dropping their Skewb mark by 48.8 percent down to 5.97. Kantanut Suwanuntanakul took on three events, finishing 8th in Clock with a first attempt of 7.18, trying Skewb for the first time with an 11.40, and taking 40.9 percent off their 3x3x3 Cube personal best to hit 14.05.

Other solvers similarly expanded their repertoires with great success throughout the schedule. Kaweewat Jiraphatwong entered four disciplines, recording first career attempts of 1:51.80 in Megaminx, 6.99 in Skewb, and 22.87 in Clock. Khonthee Jaroensiriphan also mounted a versatile four-event campaign, logging first official results of 2:53.87 in Megaminx, 15.07 in Clock, and 10.18 in Skewb. Ramil Pliansinchai matched that four-event versatility, logging debut marks of 19.15 in Clock, 7.76 in Skewb, and 32.25 in Square-1.
