Gabriel Dias Souza dos Santos Commands Big Cubes at Back to the Cube Ceilândia 2024English

The tables were lined with precision mats and digital timers inside Centro Educacional 06 de Ceilândia as 77 competitors gathered for an intense weekend of puzzle solving. Held across August 24 and August 25, the venue in Brasília, Distrito Federal, Brazil, buzzed with continuous turns and clicks across 18 separate rounds. Enthusiasts of modern speedcubing took their stations under tournament conditions, setting up two days of rigorous competition across ten official events. From high-speed sprints to endurance tests, the atmosphere remained sharp as every solver prepared to test their practice against the official clock.

Nowhere was the pressure of the format more evident than in the large-cube disciplines, where the mean-of-3 format leaves zero room for error. Unlike standard average-of-five events where competitors can discard their slowest time, every single mistake in big cubes counts directly against the final average. A single parity error, popped piece, or misaligned layer can unravel an entire podium bid across three long solves. Navigating these thin margins requires continuous concentration and tactical execution, placing total emphasis on consistency from the opening rotation to the final lock-in.

Gabriel Dias Souza dos Santos proved entirely equal to that test, executing a dominant double victory in the large-puzzle categories at Back to the Cube Ceilândia 2024. In the 6x6x6 Cube final, Dias Souza dos Santos assembled a winning mean of 2:25.32, anchored by the weekend best single of 2:16.50. Bárbara Guerra secured second place with a 2:30.88 mark, while Miguel Meireles Godoi finished third with 3:49.68. Dias Souza dos Santos returned to the table in the 7x7x7 Cube to repeat the feat, putting up a winning average of 3:17.36 and a 3:05.50 single. Guerra again claimed runner-up with 3:22.07, ahead of Felipe Fonseca Gontijo Neiva in third at 6:14.48.

Away from the main table victories, several competitors delivered massive personal breakthroughs across multiple disciplines. Guilherme Ribeiro Sabbag Amaral took on five events and posted a huge 50.3% improvement in Pyraminx with a personal best of 4.59 seconds compared to a previous 9.23, while also recording his first ever attempt at Clock with 54.07 and dropping his Skewb mark to 13.87. Mirian Eduarda Donato Vargas entered three events, logging a first Pyraminx solve of 18.35 seconds and slicing 45.3% off her 2x2x2 Cube personal best down to 6.17 seconds. Théo Silva dos Reis also excelled in the smaller formats, taking his 2x2x2 best down by 38.6% to 14.81 seconds, improving his 3x3x3 best to 46.09, and setting a first Pyraminx mark of 25.76.

The depth of progression continued through diverse schedules across the floor. Gabriel do Prado Sobral Pugsley shaved 35.5% off his 3x3x3 Cube best with a new 17.30 mark, while making his first career attempts in Megaminx at 1:59.80 and Clock at 14.70. Lucas Ryuki Brito Oya dropped his 2x2x2 best by 31.3% to 7.67 seconds and ventured into new territory with debut times of 22.04 in Clock and 1:19.77 in Square-1. Gustavo Soares de Sousa improved his 3x3x3 single by 30.2% down to 14.03, took 12th in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an initial 24.40 clocking, and logged a 2:28.47 Megaminx debut. Roberta Oliveira Garcia Queiroz tackled an ambitious slate of ten events, taking 7th in 6x6x6 Cube while making debut attempts in 7x7x7 at 6:54.46, 6x6x6 at 4:36.23, and Square-1 at 40.25. Lucas Setúbal Dias da Cunha placed 11th in Square-1 with a first attempt of 44.27, alongside debut marks in Clock at 12.56 and Skewb at 11.68.

The flagship Rubik's Cube division brought 74 entrants to the floor over three rounds of intense action. Jonas Feitosa Cavalcante Filho emerged on top in the final, securing the title with a winning 3x3 results average of 9.90 seconds and an event-best single of 8.27. João Victtor Rocha Leite claimed second place with a 10.62 average, closely followed by Matheus Barbosa de Miranda in third at 10.80. Cavalcante Filho was the lone solver in the division to break into sub-10 second territory for a final average over the weekend.

Eduardo Ribeiro Strauch captured Skewb with a 5.26 average, Miquéias Dantas dos Santos won Megaminx in 1:00.37, and Marlon de V. Marques paced Square-1 with an 18.84 average. Brazilian competitors locked down all 30 podium positions across the tournament.

Whether mastering the tight margins of big-cube mean-of-3 formats or sprinting through side puzzles, the speed cubing community in the region delivered memorable performances throughout the 2024 season, setting a high standard for every future WCA competition.
