Consistency Over Chaos: Akhil Vikram and Dhruv Thirumalairajan Master MadrasEnglish
A nail-biting 3x3x3 final at Madras Christian College in Tambaram brought the essence of speedcubing down to mere hundredths of a second. Canada's Akhil Vikram demonstrated supreme steadiness under pressure, capturing the flagship title with an 8.68 winning average over five solves, supported by a best single of 7.58. In an intense showcase where raw singles yielded to unwavering composure, Vikram narrowly edged out Shreyash Boddepalli, who took second place with an 8.70 average. Jogeeth claimed third on the podium with an 8.77 mark, concluding a contest where the podium was decided by thin margins across 80 competitors.
Held across two packed days from January 11 to January 12, Back to Cubing Madras 2025 hosted 94 competitors in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Organised across 13 events and 17 rounds, the WCA competition proved that steady pacing and repeatable execution reign supreme across all official formats. Solvers tackled everything from classic puzzles to specialised disciplines, creating a memorable weekend of competition in the southern metropolis early in 2025.
The 3x3 results formed only one chapter of a weekend defined by relentless precision. Across the larger puzzles, Dhruv Thirumalairajan authored a complete masterclass by sweeping every big cube on the schedule. Thirumalairajan claimed top honours in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 32.00 average, then carried that dominance over to the 5x5x5 Cube with a winning mark of 55.63 ahead of Nishanth Meganathan and Mohith B. His dominance continued into the heaviest rotations, logging a 1:52.66 average to capture the 6x6x6 Cube and a 2:55.88 average for the 7x7x7 Cube title, outlasting Sujai Shakthivel in both events.
Short-format events produced lightning-quick turnarounds, where Ian Cantius Fredric earned the 2x2x2 Cube title with a 1.97 average and a 1.24 single. Fredric set the standard across the event, joined on the podium by the United Kingdom's Aayush Sriram Bharadwaj with 2.34 and Prashanth Swaminathan with 2.37. Meanwhile, Mohith B produced a versatile double-victory weekend, claiming first place in Pyraminx with a 3.44 average and mastering the 3x3x3 One-Handed event courtesy of a 13.96 average against a competitive 45-person field.
The specialised disciplines rewarded dedicated specialists who kept errors to a bare minimum. Sahas Darsh Miglani secured the Clock title with a 7.01 average, while Arun Krishnan locked down the Skewb crown with a 5.01 winning mark. In Square-1, Nishanth Meganathan posted a 12.61 average to lead the pack, while Muhammad Rayyan finished atop Megaminx with a 54.63 average. Anirudh Narasimhan took gold in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, navigating memorisation and blind execution to log a winning 57.96 single.
Away from the top of the podium, Back to Cubing Madras 2025 showcased massive individual breakthroughs and courage across multiple new disciplines.
