Elo and Kinnunen Set the Pace Across Fast-Paced Tables in HelsinkiEnglish

Urho Kinnunen scorched the tables at Autotalo Small Cubes 2023 with a blistering 2.06 winning average in the 2x2x2 Cube final, punctuated by an event-leading 1.88 single. The sheer speed of the short-format contest set an aggressive tone for the entire gathering in Helsinki, Finland, on April 30, 2023. Across four compact events, competitors faced high-tempo scrambles where a fraction of a second separated podium contenders. Kinnunen managed to keep his composure throughout three rounds of 2x2, holding off a competitive pack to secure the top step on the podium in emphatic fashion.

The 2x2 final featured tight margins right behind Kinnunen, where Antto Pitkänen claimed second place with an average of 3.37 and Viljo Elo completed the podium in third at 3.65. With 18 competitors taking part across three rounds, the event demanded absolute precision from the opening turn. Pitkänen registered a sharp 2.19 single along the way, while Elo produced a solid 2.97. The rapid format left no room for error, rewarding solvers who executed their inspection time cleanly and transitioned into algorithms without hesitation.

In the classic 3x3x3 Cube, the premier test of standard speedcubing, Viljo Elo delivered a masterclass across three rounds to take the title. Elo posted a winning average of 8.94 in the final, accompanied by the fastest single of the contest at 7.74. Nineteen competitors entered the 3x3 fray, making it the most attended discipline of the competition. The 3x3 results confirmed the depth of the field, as Arttu Puttonen took second place with a 9.35 average, and Kinnunen picked up third with a 9.66 mark to earn his second podium finish of the day.

Elo doubled his gold-medal tally in 3x3x3 One-Handed, an event that brings unique technical demands to traditional Rubik's Cube solving. Operating with a single hand requires intense finger strength, distinct ergonomics, and creative fingertricks to maintain turning velocity. Elo led the field of 17 competitors across three rounds, posting an unrivaled 11.29 average and a 10.18 single in the final. Kinnunen followed in second place with an average of 14.81, while Pitkänen rounded out the top three at 16.74.

Away from the top of the podium, several competitors made substantial strides in their official journeys. Elia Maijala tackled four disciplines and notched massive milestones, taking on the 2x2x2 Cube for the first time with a 6.84 single and attempting 3x3x3 One-Handed for the first time with a 34.14 mark. Maijala also shattered their previous 3x3x3 Cube standard, dropping their personal best from 21.64 to 16.74, an improvement of 22.6 percent. Leo Huuki likewise branched out into 3x3x3 One-Handed for the first time, recording a 46.35, while trimming their 3x3x3 personal best by 5.7 percent from 18.52 down to 17.47 across four events.

That spirit of progression extended through the rest of the roster at this cubing competition. Leevi Salo delivered a standout performance, capturing a 4th-place finish in the 2x2x2 Cube while cutting their 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 16.2 percent, dropping from 9.42 to 7.89 across three events. Aaron Stråhlman entered three disciplines and completed a first career attempt in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a time of 38.80. Aleksi Tuononen posted personal bests of 21.03 in One-Handed, a 3.3 percent improvement over their prior 21.75 mark, and 10.37 in 3x3. Ivan Kunitcyn took on four events, finishing 8th in Clock and improving their 2x2x2 Cube best by 7.9 percent, lowering it from 2.80 to 2.58.

The Clock event introduced a distinctly mechanical rhythm to Autotalo Small Cubes 2023, requiring competitors to manage dual-faced dial alignments across two rounds of play. Antto Pitkänen earned top honors among 12 entrants with a winning average of 6.23, backed by a tournament-best single of 5.18. The podium remained tightly packed, as Turo Andersson secured second place with a 6.70 average and Niko Ronkainen took third with a 6.82 average, demonstrating steady dial control under pressure.

All told, the 19 competitors generated 11 rounds of action in the Autotalo venue, representing a focused day of speed cubing at its most direct. Finnish solvers swept all 12 available podium positions across the four contested events, showing consistent depth in both sprint formats and technical puzzle disciplines. For every competitor involved in this WCA competition, the single-day gathering provided valuable official experience and a wealth of improved marks to build upon for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Pienempien kuutioiden puolella 2x2x2-luokassa nähtiin salamannopeita ratkaisuja, joissa pienetkin virheet kostautuivat heti.
