Big Cubes Take Center Stage in Johor Bahru at Austin Big Cubes Day 2024English

Emmanuel Kao produced a dazzling Singapore national record average of 25.20 seconds on the 4x4x4 Cube, setting the defining benchmark on a fast-paced day of high-order puzzle action in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. The one-day gathering, held on May 4, 2024, brought 27 competitors together to test their hardware and lookahead across 11 rounds of competition. While traditional 3x3 results usually dominate the headlines, this specialized event gave the biggest puzzles on the speedcubing circuit exclusive room to shine.

The venue at Pangsapuri Seri 18 (Cube 8 Teens) offered an intimate and dedicated setting for heavy turning. Competitors and supporters packed the hall, where the steady clatter of larger layers moving at full speed replaced the usual lighter rhythm of standard Rubik's Cube solving. With four demanding events on the schedule, the focused environment proved ideal for sustained concentration, allowing competitors from Malaysia, Singapore, and China to push their times to new limits throughout a demanding single-day schedule.

The 4x4x4 Cube opened the day with high drama across two complete rounds. Tee Kai Yang of Malaysia captured the title with a winning average of 26.50 seconds and a best single of 24.92 seconds, holding off a fierce challenge from Kao, who finished second on the podium with a 27.66 average despite his earlier national record in the opening stage. Ng Jia Quan took third place for Malaysia with a 27.71 average, completing a remarkably tight final where mere fractions of a second separated the top three finishers.

As the puzzle sizes increased, Lim Hung stepped into total control of the competition. In the 6x6x6 Cube final, Lim secured victory for Malaysia with a winning average of 1:21.99 and a best single of 1:19.00 across three rigorous rounds. Kao earned second place with a 1:22.50 average, while Anyu Zhang of China claimed the third podium step with a 1:27.91 average, proving how consistently the leading trio could manage the immense complexity of the big cubes.

Lim completed an impressive double victory in the 7x7x7 Cube, crossing under the two-minute threshold with a winning average of 1:59.96 and a best single of 1:58.26 over three rounds of competition. Kao followed in second place with a 2:07.79 average, while Zhang collected another third-place finish for China with 2:08.39. The podium distribution across the meet reflected the regional rivalry, with Malaysia capturing 5 podium places, Singapore earning 4, and China taking 3.
