A Weekend of Strategic Solving and Swift Podiums at Arraiolos Open 2025English

Inside Cine-Teatro Arraiolos, the atmosphere combined deliberate calculation and intense manual speed. While events requiring methodical study like 3x3x3 Blindfolded rewarded silence and complete memorisation, the auditorium was primarily alive with the sound of turning plastic. Fifty-six competitors gathered for the Arraiolos Open 2025, taking their places across eleven rounds of play on March 29, 2025. The historic setting in Arraiolos, Portugal provided a fitting stage for a packed one-day cubing competition that tested every facet of solver precision and quick dexterity.

The focal point of any WCA competition remains the classic 3x3x3 Cube, and the 3x3 results delivered fine margins right down to the final round. Pedro Azevedo earned the victory for Portugal, recording a winning average of 9.12 seconds and capturing the best single solve of the event at 8.29 seconds across three rounds of 56 competitors. He was pushed hard by Afonso Carapeto, who took second place with an average of 9.41 seconds, while Marta Fernandes Cid secured third on the podium with a 9.53 mark, completing an all-Portuguese sweep on the main stage.

Pedro Azevedo did not stop with the main event, appearing across multiple podiums throughout the weekend. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Azevedo matched Belgium solver Kobe Lutjeharms with a 2.54 final average, but Lutjeharms claimed first place on the strength of a 2.14 single solve. Azevedo took second place, and Diogo Miguel Alves Guerreiro joined them on the podium in third place with a 3.17 average. The competition across 54 competitors featured three rounds of lightning-fast turns on the smaller puzzle.

In the Pyraminx event, Miguel Duarte Afonso Pais led the 46-competitor field over two rounds to seize top honours with a winning average of 5.17 seconds and a best single solve of 3.91 seconds. Diogo Miguel Alves Guerreiro claimed the second spot on the podium with a 6.15 average, while Pedro Azevedo added yet another medal to his tally by finishing third with 6.20. The dynamic tetrahedral puzzle demanded fast pattern recognition, rewarding Pais for a consistently brisk pace.

The Skewb bracket brought international success for Spain as Mar Gallego Vicente achieved victory among 41 competitors. Finishing two rounds with a winning average of 4.04 seconds and a top single of 3.72 seconds, Gallego Vicente led the standings ahead of Portugal competitors Pedro Azevedo, who averaged 4.52, and Diogo Miguel Alves Guerreiro, who finished third with 4.68. Meanwhile, 3x3x3 Blindfolded demanded absolute concentration over a single round of 14 solvers, where Inês Picado earned first place for Portugal with a 1:20.05 average and a 1:11.23 single, followed by Spain competitor Jesús Lindo García at 1:29.71 and Miguel Duarte Afonso Pais at 1:50.74.

Beyond the podium battles, several participants celebrated standout progress throughout the day.
