Arad Cubing 2023 Brings Fast Times and Deep Brackets to Colegiul Sabin DragoiEnglish
Inside the halls of Colegiul de Arte Sabin Dragoi, the tables were set with timing mats, display screens, and rows of judging stations as competitors gathered for a packed weekend of speedcubing. The atmosphere in Arad, Romania, across August 26 to August 27 was driven entirely by the organizers, delegates, and dedicated volunteers who kept the schedule moving through 19 full rounds across nine separate events. Their tireless work running score sheets, staffing stations, and managing the staging area allowed a field of 60 competitors to test their skills in an efficient, welcoming WCA competition environment.
The smooth logistics provided the perfect stage for standout performances, particularly in the headline 3x3x3 Cube contest. Over three intense rounds that tested 59 participants, Ianis Costin Chele delivered decisive 3x3 results to claim victory with a winning average of 7.11 seconds alongside a best single solve of 6.45 seconds. Chele led a competitive final where Zénó Vitale took second place for Hungary with an average of 7.58, and Serban Stelian secured the third step on the podium with an 8.33 average, showing the exceptional quality of Rubik's Cube solving present in the room.
Ianis Costin Chele proved nearly unstoppable throughout Arad Cubing 2023, converting multiple appearances into five gold-medal finishes across various puzzle styles. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Chele captured first place with a 1.80 average, ahead of Stelian at 2.35 and Mihail Stoicescu at 2.63. The Pyraminx final brought another victory for Chele with a 2.38 average, once again topping Stelian and Stoicescu. Chele also claimed the top spots in Megaminx with a 41.97 average and Square-1 with a mark of 13.15, where Stoicescu and János Bereczki finished second and third respectively.
While Chele commanded the shorter formats, János Bereczki demonstrated mastery across the big cube disciplines. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Bereczki posted a winning average of 27.08 seconds to defeat Chele and Stelian. Moving to the heavier machinery, Bereczki swept both the 6x6x6 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube events with winning marks of 1:17.88 and 1:59.43, keeping Chele in second place across both categories. Hungarian finalist Dániel Varga collected bronze medals in both large cube divisions, posting averages of 2:36.10 on the 6x6x6 and 3:41.37 on the 7x7x7 to round out the international podium spread.
The specialty categories also featured memorable displays of concentration, notably in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded division where twelve solvers tackled the mental rigors of unseen execution. Serban Stelian captured the blindfolded title with a best single solve of 1:02.57, earning first place over Oarga Darius Eduard, who finished second with 1:07.06, and Alexandru Ignat, who rounded out the podium at 1:20.21. In total, Romanian competitors secured 24 podium placements across the weekend, while Hungarian solvers took three, reflecting the strong regional speed cubing talent present at the venue.
Beyond the title fights and podium ceremonies, the weekend saw substantial individual progress from competitors making huge strides in their official marks. Andrei Boros entered three events and delivered dramatic improvements, dropping his 2x2x2 personal best to 4.81 seconds, which was 66.6 percent faster than his prior 14.38, while reducing his 3x3x3 mark by 49.6 percent down to 21.24 seconds, alongside his first ever attempt at Pyraminx. Dragos George Brebu took on four events, setting a 2x2x2 personal best of 2.05 seconds that was 62.9 percent faster than his previous best, while finishing 20th in that event and trimming his 4x4x4 and Pyraminx times.
Other participants also expanded their repertoires with ambitious multi-event schedules and sharp drops in solving times. Brumar Marian-Iustin improved his 2x2x2 personal best to 7.00 seconds, an improvement of 58.6 percent, and recorded a first ever attempt at Pyraminx. Norbert Lázár took on four events and lowered his 4x4x4 best to 1:15.68, shaving 55.9 percent off his previous 2:51.68 mark, alongside personal bests in Pyraminx and the 3x3x3 Cube. Ancuța Ruxandra Demeter achieved an official 4x4x4 single of 1:22.63 in her first try while improving her Pyraminx mark by 46.7 percent to 6.48.
New milestones continued across the score sheets as Alex Rosca competed in three events, placing 11th in Pyraminx with a personal best of 6.30 that was 32.5 percent faster than before, while posting his first ever official attempts in both the 2x2x2 and 3x3x3 categories. By keeping judging lanes running smoothly and results verified quickly, the tournament crew delivered a classic cubing competition where seasoned winners and improving solvers alike could celebrate clean solves and solid personal milestones as the regional season moves forward.
