Blindfolded Mastery and Rising Talent Highlight Amherst Spring Challenge 2024English
Inside the historic rooms of the Amherst Woman's Club, the quiet focus was palpable as competitors prepared for a demanding slate of specialist events. Tables were lined with blindfolds, stopwatches, and paper pads rather than the frantic clatter of conventional speed solving. Enthusiasts gathered in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA for a focused test of memory and efficiency, with young talents and experienced solvers alike settling into their routines across a tightly packed schedule on March 16, 2024.
The single-day cubing competition brought together 18 dedicated competitors tackling 5 events across 6 rounds. While specialist disciplines like blindfolded solving and efficiency challenges require deep concentration, the rapid rise of younger competitors was evident throughout the hall. These up-and-coming solvers continue to push boundaries, adapting quickly to complex memorisation techniques and algorithm sets that traditionally took years to master.
Rowe Hessler delivered an extraordinary sweep across the blindfolded disciplines, capturing four separate titles during the weekend. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, Hessler secured victory with a winning average of 21.97 seconds and a best single of 19.23 seconds across 2 rounds. Thiago Han of Brazil took second place with an average of 27.89 seconds, while Joey Mait claimed third on the podium with a mark of 48.02 seconds in a competitive 16-person field where 3x3 results rewarded sharp memorisation.
Hessler also dominated the larger blindfolded puzzles, navigating the immense mental load required for big cubes without sight. In 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Hessler earned top honours with a winning single of 2:23.18, ahead of Ethan Zorger in second at 7:56.25 and Joey Mait in third at 9:46.50. The 5x5x5 Blindfolded contest proved even more gruelling, where Hessler was the lone competitor to post a successful solve, finishing in 5:00.61 as ten fellow competitors recorded a DNF.
The endurance test of 3x3x3 Multi-Blind saw Hessler complete an astonishing 49 out of 64 cubes within the strict time limit, clocking 59:51 to take first place. Thiago Han delivered an impressive runner-up performance by successfully solving 19 of 25 cubes in 57:01, while Joey Mait rounded out the podium positions by resolving 13 of 16 cubes in 52:51. The discipline remains one of the most taxing tests in speedcubing, demanding immense stamina and spatial recall.
Away from the top of the podium, several determined competitors achieved remarkable milestones that highlighted the event's depth. Elliot Wiecek entered 3 events and achieved a 4th-place finish in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, setting a personal best single of 27 moves that was 6.9 percent faster than their previous mark of 29. Jacob Schwartz similarly entered 3 events, placing 5th in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves while matching that 6.9 percent improvement with a personal best of 27 moves down from 29. Rachel Braverman tackled her first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, locking in a score of 53 moves to finish 17th.
The progress continued across the scorecards as other dedicated solvers expanded their repertoires. Elijah Rain Phelps took on 3 events and delivered their first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, achieving a flawless 2 out of 2 cubes in 11:56 to place 6th overall. Eli Rogers contested 3 events and earned an 8th-place result in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, while Margot Audero competed in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves to claim an 11th-place finish in the field.
In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Aedan Bryant took the title with an average of 23.00 moves and a best single of 22, outlasting Levi Gibson who finished second with an average of 23.33. Thiago Han secured third place with an average of 27.33 moves in the 18-competitor event. The discipline challenged participants to find the most direct solution for the standard Rubik's Cube on paper within an hour.
The Amherst Spring Challenge 2024 concluded as a showcase of analytical skill and speed cubing endurance. With the United States claiming 19 podium positions and Brazil taking 4, this WCA competition demonstrated how swiftly rising solvers are honing their craft in complex blindfolded and efficiency events. As the 2024 season progresses, the rapid development seen at the Amherst Spring Challenge 2024 promises even greater achievements ahead.
