Cut Structures and Multi-Round Formats Shape the Action at Aldeilla Open 2023English

Inside the Centro Cultural de Santa María del Águila, the rhythmic clicking of puzzle mechanisms echoed across the competition floor as competitors adjusted their mats and timers. Sixty-five speedcubers gathered in Santa María del Águila, Almería, Spain, ready to navigate fourteen rounds across eight different events over the weekend of February 11–12, 2023. The competitive format dictated the pace of the weekend, with some events offering multiple rounds to narrow the field and others demanding immediate execution in high-stakes single rounds.

The 3x3x3 Cube served as the centerpiece of this cubing competition, featuring a 64-person field that was whittled down across three separate rounds. With each cut reducing the lineup, consistency was mandatory. Lorenzo Escobar Kraskouskaya mastered the format, delivering a winning average of 7.54 seconds in the final to take top honors, punctuated by the tournament's best single solve of 6.33 seconds. Miguel Ángel González-Herrero García secured second place with a 9.24 average, edging Carlos Méndez García-Barroso, who claimed third with 9.25 seconds to complete the headline 3x3 results.

In the shorter multi-round brackets, the margins between advancing and missing the cut were razor-thin. Miguel Ángel González-Herrero García captured the 2x2x2 Cube title through two demanding rounds, posting a 2.40 winning average and a single of 1.91. Álvaro Aguilar Salobreña finished as runner-up with a 2.62 average, while Carlos Méndez García-Barroso took third in 2.66. The Pyraminx bracket, also contested over two rounds among 46 entrants, saw Raúl Cuevas Castillo take victory with a 3.92 average, finishing ahead of Jorge Martín Espinosa at 4.13 and Álvaro Aguilar Salobreña at 4.97.

The 4x4x4 Cube and Skewb also utilized two-round structures to test stamina and versatility. Mauro Moisés Ortega López rose to the top of the 35-player 4x4x4 field, logging an average of 34.17 and a single of 31.67 to defeat Miguel Ángel González-Herrero García, who averaged 36.67, and Rafael Rodriguez Santana, who took third in 36.97. Meanwhile, Carlos Méndez García-Barroso emerged victorious in Skewb with a 3.19 winning average, followed by Fernando Sáez Lázaro at 3.68 and Miguel Ángel González-Herrero García at 4.48, proving that navigating early cutoffs paid dividends in the finals.

Beyond the podium battles, several participants used the tournament to push their limits and explore new disciplines.
