Lapeyre and Goluboff Trade Victories in High-Stakes Argentine Spring ThrillerEnglish

A mere three hundredths of a second decided the Pyraminx final at Abierto del Mirador en Primavera 2024, delivering the most electrifying finish of a packed weekend in Lomas del Mirador, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Gael Augusto Lapeyre clinched the top spot on the podium with a 3.10-second average, barely edging past Federico da Fonseca, who posted a blistering 3.13 average, while Theo Goluboff took third at 3.57. That razor-thin margin set the tone for an intense meeting where podium spots were contested to the hundredth across two days of elite competition.

Held across September 28 and September 29, the WCA competition brought together 54 competitors to Club Defensores de la Loma. Across 11 events and 21 separate rounds, Argentine speedcubing talent took center stage, claiming all 33 available podium places. The gathering offered a full showcase of mechanical disciplines, extending from the frantic pace of the classic Rubik's Cube to large-cube endurance, single-handed solving, and memory-intensive blindfolded events in the 2024 spring schedule.

The duel between Lapeyre and Goluboff defined much of the upper tier. In the flagship 3x3x3 Cube, the 3x3 results culminated in another tight confrontation. Lapeyre captured first place with an average of 7.32 seconds and a best single of 6.43 across three rounds featuring 51 competitors. Goluboff pressured him all the way, finishing as the runner-up with a 7.48 average, while Federico Ojeda secured third with 9.12. Lapeyre also added a dominant victory in the 4x4x4 Cube, posting a winning average of 29.94 and a single of 27.28.

Goluboff retaliated across multiple categories, assembling an extraordinary collection of titles throughout the cubing competition. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, he claimed victory with a 10.49 average and an 8.27 single, outpacing Lapeyre, who took second with 13.91, and Damián Jail Campos in third at 15.02. Goluboff also led the field in the Clock division with a 4.76 average, while Lapeyre finished second with 5.51 and Manuel Jontin Luna placed third at 6.81.

On the big cubes, Goluboff proved untouchable. He topped the 5x5x5 Cube final with a 50.06 average ahead of Lapeyre at 1:00.69 and da Fonseca at 1:06.03. In the 6x6x6 Cube, Goluboff won with a 1:25.87 average, joined on the podium by Lapeyre at 1:52.55 and da Fonseca at 2:03.87. Goluboff completed his long-distance sweep in the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:21.70 average, besting Lapeyre at 2:38.67 and Manuel Gutman at 3:14.00, demonstrating remarkable consistency across deep turn sequences.
