France Sweeps the Podium Positions Across the Board in Villeneuve lès AvignonEnglish

Inside Salle Mistral on December 2 and 3, timers flashed green across rows of competition stations as solve mats took steady impact throughout the weekend. A gathering of 48 competitors assembled for the Villeneuve les Avignon Open 2023, filling the venue with the rhythmic clatter of plastic layers turning at top speed. Over two full days in Villeneuve lès Avignon, France, the program spanned 11 events and 12 rounds, drawing solvers into a dense schedule that tested dexterity on everything from compact triangles to massive layered cubes.

The standout storyline of the weekend was absolute national dominance, as French competitors secured all 33 available podium positions across the tournament. Leading that home charge was Abdelhak Kaddour, who authored an extraordinary run across the conventional twisty puzzles. In the 3x3x3 Cube, which drew the largest field of the weekend with 46 competitors across two rounds, Kaddour captured top honors with a decisive winning average of 8.21 seconds, backed by a best single of 7.21 seconds, narrowly holding off Jules Desjardin whose final average reached 8.40 seconds.

The 3x3 results formed only a portion of Kaddour’s remarkable weekend haul. He proved virtually unstoppable across the big cube categories, sweeping gold in four consecutive hardware disciplines. He secured the 4x4x4 Cube with a 27.58 winning average and a 24.45 single against 33 competitors, followed immediately by victory in the 5x5x5 Cube where he recorded a 50.61 average. Stepping up to the largest mechanisms, Kaddour claimed the 6x6x6 Cube title in 1:34.78 and finished his sweep on the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:26.50 average, demonstrating command across every standard Rubik's Cube format.

Behind Kaddour in the 3x3x3 Cube, the podium was rounded out by Jules Desjardin in second with an 8.40 average and Diego Fraile in third with 9.68. The big cube podiums reflected similar French depth. In the 5x5x5 Cube final, Desjardin claimed second place with 1:03.37 while Marie Vincent captured third in 1:11.08. Vincent added another medal in the 6x6x6 Cube, taking second place in 2:14.48 just ahead of Dorian Prieto, who clocked 2:15.96 for third, locking up yet another three-step podium sweep for the host nation.

Away from the main podium battles, the floor of Salle Mistral saw tremendous personal progression across all skill levels, showing the real depth of this cubing competition. Achille Caesteker delivered one of the steepest single-event jumps of the weekend in the 3x3x3 Cube, lowering his personal best to 21.97 seconds, which was 48.7 percent faster than his prior mark of 42.79. Mathurin Deramecourt took on four events, finishing 10th in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind and slicing his 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best down to 5:12.04, an improvement of 47.5 percent. Mickaïl Yaslan took on six separate events, earning an 11th-place best finish in Megaminx while recording a massive 40.9 percent drop to 1:18.80 in Megaminx and a 23.7 percent drop to 1:55.22 in 5x5x5 Cube, along with a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 4:23.07.
