Yiheng Wang Dominates Stacked Fields at Thailand Championship 2023English

Yiheng Wang delivered an electrifying masterclass at the Thailand Championship 2023, blazing through three rounds of the classic 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube to capture the title with an astonishing 5.85 winning average. Wang also secured the round best single of 4.58, setting an untouchable standard in a massive field of 191 competitors. The tournament unfolded over three action-packed days from October 20 to October 22 at JJMall in Bangkok, Thailand, drawing 205 total speedcubing entrants who battled across 13 distinct disciplines and 27 grueling rounds.

The sheer depth of competition in Bangkok, Thailand made every advancement a major achievement. Reaching a final required surviving cutthroats heats and razor-thin margins. Wang extended his dominance to the short formats, sweeping the 2x2x2 Cube with a 1.21 winning average after delivering an Asian record average of 1.08 earlier in the rounds. He backed that up by taking the Pyraminx title with a 2.60 average, outpacing 126 competitors to claim his third victory of the weekend.

Host nation speed cubing talent rose to the occasion in the larger Rubik's Cube variants and alternative puzzles. Parist Pariyakanok earned double gold, capturing the 3x3x3 One-Handed event with a 10.87 average against 107 competitors and seizing the 4x4x4 Cube crown in 26.46 seconds across a 103-person field. Pariyakanok also took second place in both the 3x3x3 Cube final with a 7.08 average and the Clock event, where Supakrit Sanghiran claimed victory with a sharp 5.28 average.

The heavy hardware divisions saw intense, high-level duels between elite competitors from across the region. Singapore standout Tristan Chua Yong captured two premier titles, winning the Megaminx with a 29.30 average and outlasting 37 competitors in the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:13.60 mark. Asia Konvittayayotin earned a standout victory for the home crowd in the 6x6x6 Cube, posting a winning average of 1:32.91. Meanwhile, Xuming Wang held off Konvittayayotin by fractions of a second to win the 5x5x5 Cube final in 48.92.

Elsewhere across the stage, the technical and specialty events brought dramatic finishes. Yening Liu took top honors in the Skewb final with a 3.15 average, while Chawin Ratanasiri secured the Square-1 championship averaging 10.73. In the high-focus 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, where total memorisation and execution without sight are paramount, Yifan Wang solved his way to gold with an 18.94 average, clear of a 27-competitor field.

Beyond the championship podiums, the event floor at this WCA competition was defined by personal breakthroughs across expansive schedules. Khonthee Jaroensiriphan took on all 13 events on the schedule, achieving a 13th-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded on a first ever attempt of 3:29.86, while cutting their Square-1 personal best by 76.2 percent to 24.07 and dropping their 2x2x2 Cube mark by 27.8 percent down to 3.79.
