Taiwan Championship 2024 Showcases Complete Spectrum of World Cube Association EventsEnglish

Inside the Shin Kong Life Xinban Finance Building, tables were lined with every conceivable geometric puzzle as hundreds of timers stood ready for action. Across three intensive days from December 6 to December 8, the venue in New Taipei City, Taiwan became an arena testing mechanical dexterity and spatial memory across every discipline recognized in modern speedcubing. The broad schedule brought together 247 competitors navigating 34 rounds of play, transforming the floor into an intricate display of multidimensional problem-solving.

The full slate of 17 official events meant that the classic Rubik's Cube shared the stage with massive multi-layered hardware, side events, and complex blindfolded disciplines. The sheer variety across the weekend demanded constant adaptability from competitors who transitioned from rapid side events like Clock and Skewb to massive endurance challenges on the 6x6x6 and 7x7x7 cubes. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, which featured 232 competitors across four grueling rounds, Seung Hyuk Nahm of Korea secured first place with a winning average of 6.57 seconds alongside a best single solve of 5.72 seconds, heading the final 3x3 results.

Seung Hyuk Nahm established dominance across multiple categories throughout the weekend, collecting victories in four major cube events. Beyond the traditional 3x3x3 Cube, Nahm captured top honors in the 5x5x5 Cube with a 39.39-second winning average, the 6x6x6 Cube with a mark of 1:18.72, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a final average of 1:50.36. In the 7x7x7 Cube final, Taiwan's Ping-Yueh Huang secured second place with a time of 2:05.76, followed closely by Chun-Pao Ni in third at 2:07.63, illustrating the fierce regional competition on big cubes.

Taiwanese solvers delivered commanding performances across several technical categories, led by Kai-Wen Wang who claimed multiple titles. Wang won the 4x4x4 Cube with a 22.50 average and took top honors in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an 11.33 average, finishing ahead of Hong Kong's Ivan Li Ka Leong at 11.64 and Shih-Hao Wang at 11.72. Wang also reached the podium in Skewb with a 3.84 average, trailing Malaysia's Eng Dickson at 3.51 and event champion Luis Tan Hong Yi of Singapore, who posted a winning average of 2.70. Tan Hong Yi also won 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a single solve of 23 moves.

Beyond the podium battles, the floor of this WCA competition belonged to competitors expanding their repertoires across new formats. Yu-Lun Huang took on eight distinct events, achieving a best finish of 10th in Clock, setting a personal best average of 1.96 in 2x2x2 Cube to beat their previous mark by 36.2 percent, and logging first-ever official attempts in Clock at 4.40 and 7x7x7 Cube at 3:55.99. Te-Tien Lu made significant strides by taking on six events, improving their 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 34.6 percent down to 6.33 seconds while recording maiden official attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 2:32.38 and Megaminx at 3:37.13.

The ambition to master new puzzles was equally evident across the rest of the field as solvers embraced unfamiliar challenges. I-Chuan Lin contested an impressive 13 events, earning a 36th-place finish in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves and logging debut attempts in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 24.36, 6x6x6 Cube with 3:43.15, and 7x7x7 Cube with 5:54.32. Chen-Rui Yu entered six events, putting up maiden marks of 8.91 in Pyraminx, 12.32 in Clock, and 33.53 in 3x3x3 One-Handed. Chin-Tien Lu completed initial attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 2:11.76, 5x5x5 Cube at 4:21.83, and Megaminx at 2:25.12 across seven events, while Yu-Chuna Chen took on four events, logging first attempts in Pyraminx at 15.05, Skewb at 12.84, and 2x2x2 Cube at 5.19.

Specialty disciplines also provided striking demonstrations of focus, notably in the blindfolded categories where competitors rely entirely on memorisation before executing moves without sight. Shiori Yanai of Japan secured victory in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by solving 28 out of 33 cubes in 57:08, finishing ahead of Ping-Yueh Huang's 22 out of 28 in 55:43 and Wayne Pi's 16 out of 24 in 56:49. Shorter formats and non-cubic hardware rounded out the expansive schedule. Yu-Chun Yeh won the 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.30 average, while Bo-Yan Wu led Pyraminx with a 2.10 average ahead of Jie-Yu Xie at 2.45 and Wei-Ming Zeng at 2.62. Pei-Ni Chiang topped Clock with an average of 4.54 over Zih-Siang Huang at 5.17 and Liang-Zhen Lai at 5.21. Masayuki Hirai of Japan won Megaminx with a 33.38 average, followed by Yun-Rui Chiang at 39.71 and Yusuke Takada at 40.97. Yi-Ho Hsueh claimed Square-1 in 7.18 seconds, besting Yen-An Chen at 8.24 and Shih-Hao Wang at 9.08.

Across every event, the speed cubing festival highlighted the breadth of talent across Asia, with host nation Taiwan securing 30 podium finishes, alongside 7 for Korea, 6 for Japan, 5 for Hong Kong, 2 for Singapore, and 1 for Malaysia. The Taiwan Championship 2024 proved to be an extensive celebration of the sport in 2024, closing out an energetic weekend that celebrated technical excellence across all 17 World Cube Association disciplines.
