Yen-An Chen Doubles Up as Regional Rivals Clash at Taiwan Anti-NxNxN 2024English
Yen-An Chen delivered a commanding performance at Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School, capturing two individual titles to highlight a fiercely competitive weekend of speedcubing. Held in Taipei, Taiwan on July 20, 2024, the one-day gathering assembled 110 competitors across 13 rounds of action. With standard Rubik's Cube formats set aside in favour of specialty puzzles, the event showcased regional depth as local standouts defended home turf against visiting talent from Hong Kong.
The regional clash was on full display in the Skewb final, where Taiwan's Cian-Jyun Yang took the title with a winning average of 2.89 seconds, backed by a blistering best single of 1.73 seconds. Kai-Lun Cheng secured second place for Taiwan with an average of 3.32 seconds, while Hong Kong's Hui Chun Pong claimed the third podium position with a 3.83 mark. It was the sole top-three finish by an international challenger across the five disciplines.
Taiwan Anti-NxNxN 2024 placed non-traditional categories at centre stage, creating an intense atmosphere distinct from a standard WCA competition. Rather than tracking 3x3 results, the 83 competitors in Skewb navigated three intense rounds of turning and orientation. Cian-Jyun Yang maintained consistency throughout the elimination stages, holding off strong pushes from both domestic rivals and Hong Kong contenders to secure gold.
In Megaminx, Yen-An Chen took top honours over 58 competitors with an average of 37.73 seconds, logging a best single of 36.00 seconds. Cian-Jyun Yang claimed the silver medal with a 40.54 average, while Yi-Ho Hsueh placed third with a mark of 44.10 seconds. Chen extended his dominance to Square-1, leading the 47-competitor field with a decisive 6.35 winning average and a 5.56 single, ahead of Yi-Ho Hsueh's 8.10 and Cian-Jyun Yang's 10.72.
Beyond the championship finals, the competition brought substantial personal milestones for solvers tackling demanding events. I-Chuan Lin took on 5 events and posted a massive breakthrough in Square-1, setting a personal best single of 31.42 seconds that improved on their previous best of 54.71 by 42.6 percent, alongside a first ever Megaminx attempt of 2:00.24 and an initial Clock mark of 24.73. Pin-Shang Ye also achieved a major milestone in Clock, dropping their personal best single to 9.15 seconds from 15.78, a 42 percent leap, while completing maiden attempts of 8.41 in Pyraminx and 12.48 in Skewb across 3 events entered.
Other competitors took on ambitious schedules across the arena floor during the cubing competition. Yu-Chih Chuang competed in 4 events, reducing their Pyraminx personal best to 4.38 seconds from 6.41 for a 31.7 percent improvement, while logging first attempts in Skewb at 7.09 and Clock at 11.88. Meng-Chun Chen entered 5 events, cutting their Skewb single to 10.14 seconds from 14.30 for a 29.1 percent drop, in addition to maiden attempts in Megaminx at 3:15.93 and Square-1 at 44.36. Wei-Zhi Lu also tackled 5 events, registering first attempts in Clock at 33.05, Skewb at 13.54, and Square-1 at 24.99, while Yu-Hung Jou recorded initial attempts of 8.66 in Pyraminx, 12.97 in Clock, and 1:33.40 in Square-1.
Pyraminx drew the largest roster of the weekend, with 97 participants battling across three rounds. Bo-Yan Wu secured victory with a winning average of 2.30 seconds and a best single of 2.02. Jie-Yu Xie followed closely to earn second place on a 2.99 average, while Wei-Ming Zeng completed the podium in third with an average of 3.59 seconds, cementing a clean sweep for the local contingent.
The Clock event delivered the closest podium battle of the entire meet among 73 competitors. Pei-Ni Chiang captured first place with an average of 5.00 seconds and a best single of 4.14. Liang-Zhen Lai finished mere hundredths behind to take second place with a 5.03 average, while Shao-Heng Hung rounded out the podium in third at 5.25 seconds during an exciting round of speed cubing.
With 14 of the 15 podium positions earned by Taiwan and one by Hong Kong, Taiwan Anti-NxNxN 2024 concluded a packed day of specialty solving. The intense regional rivalries, coupled with widespread personal bests throughout the field, capped a memorable chapter of competition in Taipei as athletes look ahead to the next season of play.
