What stood out most across the weekend was the sheer volume of solvers stepping onto the official stage for their earliest attempts at unfamiliar puzzles. While elite speedcubing talents drew eyes in the late rounds, the early sessions were defined by the courage of participants expanding their repertoires and putting their practice to the test in a high-pressure environment.

The marquee Rubik's Cube event delivered world-class 3x3 results across four demanding rounds that featured 190 competitors. Yiheng Wang took top honours in the 3x3x3 Cube, posting a winning average of 4.97 seconds alongside the weekend's best single of 4.08 seconds. Kangze Wang secured second place on the podium with a 6.96 average, while Tee Kai Yang claimed third place for the host nation with an average of 7.00 seconds. The competition set a blistering standard right from the opening rounds.

Beyond the premier puzzle, Ivan Li Ka Leong put together a dominant showing across the bigger cubes at the Sunway Velocity Mall Open 2024. Li captured first place in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 26.78 winning average, edged out the field in the 5x5x5 Cube at 44.82, and claimed the 6x6x6 Cube title with a time of 1:17.57. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed final, Kangze Wang took the win averaging 11.24 seconds ahead of Tee Kai Yang and Li, while Lim Hung earned gold in the 7x7x7 Cube with an average of 1:50.36.

The shorter formats and side events moved just as quickly. Nigel Phang captured the 2x2x2 Cube title with an exceptional 1.06 average, finishing ahead of Yiheng Wang and Kaixi Guo. Kaixi Guo enjoyed a double triumph of his own, winning Pyraminx with an average of 1.95 seconds and taking first in Skewb with a 2.09 mark. Ng Jia Quan took the Clock title on home soil with an average of 4.85 seconds, Ziyu Wu dominated Megaminx in 29.14 seconds, and Lim Hung added another victory in Square-1 averaging 10.20 seconds.

Away from the top step of the podium, the heartbeat of this WCA competition belonged to solvers boldly exploring brand new challenges. Mark Chong Ze Li took on 9 separate events during his second career tournament, registering his first ever official attempts in the 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:43.88 single, Megaminx with 1:57.56, and 4x4x4 Cube in 46.25 seconds. Muhammad Hisham Bin Syaihudin, also in his second career appearance, entered 8 events and logged debut marks with an 8.37 in Pyraminx, 2:46.26 on the 5x5x5 Cube, and 5.86 in Skewb.

That adventurous spirit continued across the field. Tee Jean Wen entered 9 events, logging first-time marks in Megaminx at 2:04.53, Square-1 at 44.50, and 5x5x5 Cube at 1:48.83. Kok Ga Sin tackled 8 disciplines, earning inaugural competition times in Square-1 with 40.38, 5x5x5 Cube with 2:15.32, and Clock with 14.57. Lam Jin Vern took on 6 events and notched debut results in the 2x2x2 Cube at 6.22, 4x4x4 Cube at 1:02.73, and Pyraminx at 4.99. Meanwhile, Tay Wen Chian balanced 7 events, adding fresh official attempts in Skewb at 5.29, 3x3x3 One-Handed at 24.50, and Square-1 at 40.14.

The Sunway Velocity Mall Open 2024 concluded having demonstrated the immense depth and enthusiasm within the speed cubing scene across the region. With 17 podium spots claimed by competitors from China, 12 from Malaysia, 5 from Hong Kong, and 2 from Singapore, the international gathering highlighted both elite precision and grassroots expansion. As the timers were packed away, the weekend closed on a high note, leaving dozens of competitors with new personal benchmarks to carry forward.

From the rapid turns of the 2x2x2 Cube to the endurance demanded by the 7x7x7 Cube, the Sunway Velocity Mall Open 2024 celebrated the complete spectrum of the discipline. The competition offered equal weight to the sub-five 3x3 averages at the summit and the quiet, courageous first attempts recorded throughout the schedule. Solvers left Kuala Lumpur with fresh experience on the official stage, ready to build on their efforts when the next chapter of competition arrives.

Sebanyak 195 peserta telah berhimpun di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia bagi memeriahkan Sunway Velocity Mall Open 2024 yang berlangsung dari 25 hingga 27 Mei 2024. Suasana pertandingan kiub Rubik ini dipenuhi dengan interaksi mesra sesama peminat, perbincangan strategi penyelesaian dan sokongan berterusan antara rakan sepanjang 35 pusingan yang dipertandingkan. Di samping saingan sengit di meja utama, pertukaran pengalaman dalam pelbagai kategori sampingan membuktikan keakraban komuniti speedcubing serantau sepanjang tiga hari acara berjalan.

Dalam acara utama 3x3x3 Cube, Yiheng Wang (王艺衡) berjaya merangkul gelaran juara menerusi catatan purata 4.97 serta catatan terpantas 4.08 daripada 190 peserta yang bersaing dalam 4 pusingan. Kangze Wang (王康泽) meraih tempat kedua dengan purata 6.96, manakala Tee Kai Yang memastikan kedudukan podium buat tuan rumah di tempat ketiga dengan catatan 7.00. Persembahan cemerlang ini memberikan inspirasi besar kepada seluruh komuniti yang hadir menyaksikan kemahiran teknikal yang ditunjukkan pada pusingan akhir.

Kategori 2x2x2 Cube turut menarik tumpuan besar dengan 124 peserta berentap dalam 4 pusingan sengit. Nigel Phang dinobatkan sebagai juara selepas mencatat purata kemenangan 1.06 dan catatan terbaik 0.89. Beliau mengatasi Yiheng Wang (王艺衡) di tempat kedua dengan purata 1.24 dan Kaixi Guo (郭铠希) di tempat ketiga dengan 2.04. Di samping itu, Yiheng Wang (王艺衡) merekodkan cubaan terbaik 0.54 dan purata 1.15 dalam kategori ini, manakala Nigel Phang mencatat masa terbaik 1.14 dan purata 1.30.

Bagi kategori kiub berdimensi besar, Ivan Li Ka Leong (李嘉亮) mempamerkan penguasaan menyeluruh dengan memenangi tiga kategori berbeza. Beliau menjuarai 4x4x4 Cube dengan purata 26.78 mengatasi Tee Kai Yang di tempat kedua dengan 27.16 dan Junliang Huang (黄骏亮) di tempat ketiga dengan 27.35. Ivan Li Ka Leong (李嘉亮) turut mengungguli 5x5x5 Cube dengan purata 44.82 menewaskan Lim Hung (林弘) dengan 45.24 dan Ziyu Wu (吴子钰) dengan 46.16, selain memenangi 6x6x6 Cube menerusi purata 1:17.57.

Kategori 7x7x7 Cube pula menyaksikan kejayaan Lim Hung (林弘) yang menduduki tempat pertama dengan purata 1:50.36, mendahului Ziyu Wu (吴子钰) dengan 1:52.91 dan Anyu Zhang (张安宇) dengan 1:59.75. Lim Hung (林弘) juga cemerlang dalam acara Square-1 apabila meraih kejuaraan dengan purata 10.20 dan catatan terbaik 8.20. Sementara itu, kategori Clock menyaksikan Ng Jia Quan (黄佳铨) muncul pemenang dengan purata 4.85, diikuti Arif Imran Bin Arifin dengan purata 5.06 dan Luis Tan Hong Yi (陈宏溢) dengan 5.53.

Di sebalik pertembungan podium, pertandingan kiub ini menyerlahkan usaha gigih para peserta yang mencabar keupayaan diri dalam pelbagai acara baharu. Alden Ling menyertai 7 acara sepanjang hujung minggu ini dan melengkapkan cubaan pertama beliau dalam Square-1 dengan catatan 14.12, 3x3x3 One-Handed dengan 36.38, serta 5x5x5 Cube dengan 1:46.77. Enson Lau Yin Shing (刘彦成) pula mengambil bahagian dalam 6 acara dan mencatatkan cubaan rasmi pertama bagi 4x4x4 Cube dengan 1:39.79, Pyraminx dengan 8.57, dan Skewb dengan 12.45. Jake Kuan Boon Huat turut mempamerkan semangat tinggi dalam 5 acara dengan cubaan pertama untuk Pyraminx pada 10.75, 4x4x4 Cube pada 1:52.68, dan Skewb pada 13.24.

Kecekalan serupa turut ditunjukkan oleh Nur Faris Danial Bin Nur Azam yang menyertai 8 acara, mencapai penamat terbaik di tempat ke-12 dalam Square-1 serta menyelesaikan cubaan pertama bagi 5x5x5 Cube dengan masa 1:32.74, Megaminx dengan 1:40.91, dan 3x3x3 One-Handed dengan 22.44. Muhammad Fateh Akhir Bin Mohd Taib beraksi cemerlang merentasi 10 acara berbeza, melakar cubaan pertama bagi Megaminx pada masa 1:43.33, 3x3x3 One-Handed pada 29.04, dan Clock pada 16.08. Tidak ketinggalan, Eu Yan Luong menyertai 11 acara dan menduduki tempat ke-10 dalam Clock, di samping menyempurnakan cubaan pertama bagi Clock dengan 7.48, Megaminx dengan 1:17.09, dan Square-1 dengan 22.24.

Kategori sampingan lain turut memeriahkan dewan pertandingan apabila Kaixi Guo (郭铠希) memenangi dua kategori iaitu Pyraminx dengan purata 1.95 serta Skewb dengan purata 2.09. Dalam acara Megaminx, Ziyu Wu (吴子钰) mendominasi saingan dengan mencatatkan purata kemenangan 29.14. Bagi acara 3x3x3 One-Handed, Kangze Wang (王康泽) meraih kejuaraan menerusi purata 11.24, mengatasi saingan sengit daripada Tee Kai Yang yang mencatat 11.85 dan Ivan Li Ka Leong (李嘉亮) dengan 13.11.

Secara keseluruhan, penganjuran Sunway Velocity Mall Open 2024 membuktikan kekuatan semangat komuniti dan perpaduan dalam kalangan peminat pelbagai peringkat usia. Sebanyak 12 acara yang dipertandingkan dalam WCA competition ini berjaya menghimpunkan pencapaian podium daripada pelbagai negara termasuk China dengan 17 podium, Malaysia dengan 12 podium, Hong Kong dengan 5 podium, serta Singapura dengan 2 podium. Hujung minggu yang padat ini meninggalkan kenangan persahabatan yang bermakna bagi seluruh warga speedcubing.
