Averages Deliver Gold as Brian Johnson Anchors SacCubing XIII 2023English
The tables inside the La Sierra Community Center were buzzing with focused energy as 146 competitors gathered for a packed weekend of speedcubing action. Stopwatches clicked, plastic tiles snapped into place, and judges watched over 23 rounds of play across two full days from January 14 to January 15. The tournament in Carmichael, California, USA proved that sheer consistency over five solves matters far more than an isolated flash of speed. Across 14 official disciplines, the athletes who held their nerve across entire rounds walked away with the silverware.
Nowhere was that steady execution more visible than in the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, where 141 competitors battled through three grueling stages. Brian Johnson captured the title at SacCubing XIII 2023 by assembling a winning average of 6.47 seconds in the final, holding off Varun Mohanraj who finished runner-up with an average of 6.78 seconds. Zhouheng Sun secured third place with a 7.27 average. Johnson combined an ultra-stable pace with a best single of 6.12 to prove that dependable routines govern the most fiercely contested 3x3 results at this level of play.
Brian Johnson added further titles to his haul throughout the cubing competition, emphasizing his versatility and composure under pressure. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Johnson took top honors with a blazing winning average of 1.37 seconds after posting a best single of 0.71, finishing ahead of Varun Mohanraj at 1.74 and Simon Kellum at 2.28. Moving to larger twisty puzzles, Johnson claimed first place in Megaminx with a 45.27 average and went on to win Square-1 with an 8.07 mark. His methodical execution across varying formats set the benchmark for the entire weekend in 2023.
Simon Kellum displayed similar mastery in technical events, earning multiple victories through rigorous discipline. Kellum won the Pyraminx title with an average of 2.36 seconds and topped the Skewb bracket with an average of 3.31 seconds. In the analytical 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest, where competitors map out systematic solutions to optimize turn efficiency on the Rubik's Cube, Kellum took first place with a mean of 25.00 turns, besting Johnson at 28.67 and Christopher Yen at 32.00. Kellum proved that patience and careful planning reliably yield top-step results.
The heavy-layer puzzles belonged to Benjamin Wei, who engineered a clean sweep of the biggest hardware at SacCubing XIII 2023. Wei won the 5x5x5 Cube with a 51.05 average, narrowly edging out Varun Mohanraj who posted 51.71. Wei then conquered the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:28.29 ahead of Paul Mahvi and Danny Sungin Park, before closing out his campaign with a 7x7x7 Cube victory in 2:14.70. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Christopher Yen captured first place with an average of 28.18 seconds, edging Mohanraj at 28.43 and Park at 28.85 in a remarkably tight podium finish.
While the top steps went to seasoned contenders, personal milestones defined the atmosphere for dozens of participants across the venue. Sean Dunn delivered a massive breakthrough in Pyraminx, cutting his personal best down to 10.76 seconds, which was 56.7 percent faster than his prior mark of 24.84, alongside registering his first official Skewb attempt at 17.37. Brandon Hoover also enjoyed huge progress, setting a Skewb personal best of 11.32 that improved his previous record by 46.7 percent, while logging a first 3x3x3 One-Handed attempt of 1:25.85. Leo Golove entered 8 events and recorded a first Pyraminx attempt of 5.97, while Rafael Fesenko entered 7 events and earned a 25th-place best finish in the 6x6x6 Cube with a first attempt of 3:29.24.
Other dedicated solvers embraced the challenge of stepping onto the stage in unfamiliar formats at this WCA competition. Jacob Liu tackled 11 separate disciplines, earning a best finish of 13th in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves and completing a first 6x6x6 Cube attempt in 4:13.86. Luke Bradley entered 10 events, finishing 20th in Clock and posting a first Square-1 attempt of 27.31. Sophia Santini took on 9 events, finishing 18th in Clock and making her first 6x6x6 Cube attempt with 4:01.23, while Sean Louie entered 9 events, took 28th in Fewest Moves, and logged his first 4x4x4 Cube solve at 1:34.63.
Specialist solving delivered exciting drama as well, notably in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event where Zhouheng Sun took victory with an average of 11.25 seconds, keeping Johnson at 11.98 and Anto Kam at 12.02. In Clock, Elijah Brown secured first place with an average of 7.01 seconds. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded division demanded intense concentration, where competitors must memorize the scrambled puzzle before donning a blindfold; Anto Kam claimed the win with a single of 18.99 seconds, joined on the podium by Jason Ostdiek at 55.39 and Wilson Alvis at 1:37.01.
With 37 podium positions secured by athletes from the USA alongside international podium honors for representatives from Hong Kong, China, and Indonesia, SacCubing XIII 2023 offered a complete showcase of modern speed cubing. The two days of competition highlighted that podium finishes in speedcubing are built on repeatable, steady rounds rather than single lucky scrambles. Solvers packed up their cubes and timers ready to take these lessons forward into the next season of tournament play.
