Big Cube Mastery Highlights Action Packed Weekend at Rubik's Dutch Nationals 2025English
Inside Sportcentrum Valkenhuizen, rows of solving stations buzzed with continuous motion as hundreds of competitors gathered for three intensive days of speedcubing. The hall was filled with the rhythmic clatter of plastic layers turning at high speed and the steady chime of timers resetting across 29 scheduled rounds. Over the weekend of September 5 to September 7, the venue served as the focal point for the regional cubing community, drawing 340 participants to compete across 17 distinct official events in the heart of the Netherlands.
The larger puzzles demanded immense physical endurance and deep tactical planning throughout the schedule at Rubik's Dutch Nationals 2025. Solving the big cubes requires managing hundreds of individual pieces while sustaining mental clarity over long, uninterrupted stretches. Ireland competitor Ciarán Beahan delivered an exceptional showcase across the multi layered categories, capturing victories in 4x4x4 Cube with a 23.46 average and 5x5x5 Cube with a 41.03 average. His dominance continued on the biggest hardware, winning the 6x6x6 Cube with a mark of 1:15.81 and securing the 7x7x7 Cube title with an impressive 1:59.52 average.
Beyond the grueling large puzzles, the classic Rubik's Cube drew the largest gathering of the weekend, with 317 entrants battling through four intense rounds. Teodor Zajder of Poland claimed the top prize in the 3x3x3 Cube, recording a winning average of 5.49 along with a best single of 4.66. Twan Dullemond of the Netherlands secured second place with an average of 6.18, while Kevin Gerhardt of Germany completed the podium in third with 6.28. The final 3x3 results demonstrated world class execution at the top of the bracket in Arnhem, Netherlands.
Teodor Zajder added another gold to his tally by taking the 2x2x2 Cube with an average of 1.28, narrowly finishing ahead of Antonie Paterakis from the Netherlands at 1.32 and Imanuel Müller from Germany at 1.58. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, Patrick Ponce of the United States triumphed with a 9.95 average, edging out Andrey Che of Russia at 10.42 and Ciarán Beahan at 11.68. Kevin Gerhardt topped Skewb with a 2.68 average, Jonathan Plug won Pyraminx with 2.04, Mick Boekema secured Clock with 2.91, and Vincent Chan won Square-1 in 7.47 seconds.
Away from the top steps of the podium, the deeper story of this WCA competition belonged to competitors setting major milestones and conquering new territory. Boris Sijbers took on three events and slashed his 3x3x3 Cube personal best down to 13.03 seconds, a remarkable 50.2 percent improvement over his prior mark of 26.17, while also logging his first ever official attempt at Pyraminx in 12.04 and 2x2x2 Cube in 6.67. Anouk Korteweg tackled eight events, improving her Skewb best by 54.5 percent to 6.25 seconds, dropping her Square-1 best by 35.4 percent to 32.64, and making her debut in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 17.72.
The personal breakthroughs continued across the arena as athletes expanded their repertoires. Daniel Vos entered seven events, cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed mark by 48.9 percent to 17.68 seconds, earning a 35th place finish in Megaminx, and logging first time results in Megaminx at 1:18.13 and 5x5x5 Cube at 1:27.18. From the physical rigor of the 7x7x7 Cube down to the rapid turns of 2x2x2 Cube, competitors pushed their limits on every tier. With dozens of individual milestones achieved alongside elite international performances, the stage is set for an exciting new chapter as the community carries this momentum into the next season of cubing competition.
