Ivan Li Ka Leong and Junnosuke Takahashi Take Top Honors at Kanto Summer PM 2025English

Ivan Li Ka Leong delivered the standout performance of the afternoon in Ota, Tokyo, Japan, securing a commanding victory in the 5x5x5 Cube with an average of 45.18 seconds. His best single solve of 40.76 set the benchmark across the entire competition, demonstrating absolute control across every turn. In longer puzzle events, the cost of a single slip or locked layer can devastate a competitor's final ranking, leaving zero room for hesitation over five disciplined attempts. Li Ka Leong navigated that pressure with relentless consistency to capture the gold for Hong Kong.

The single-day WCA competition, held on August 30, 2025, brought together 75 competitors at the Ota Ward Plaza for an intense showcase of classic speedcubing. Spanning 4 rounds across two core events, Kanto Summer PM 2025 offered a concentrated schedule where every solve carried immense weight. Participants gathered to test their skills in front of the timing displays, chasing personal milestones and podium spots in one of the most active cubing hubs in the world.

In the 3x3x3 Cube event, 74 competitors lined up for the opening round of the traditional Rubik's Cube. The competition intensified in the final round, where Junnosuke Takahashi claimed victory with a remarkably composed winning average of 7.28 seconds. Takahashi also recorded a best single solve of 6.80 seconds during the event to lead the final standings. Sei Sugama earned second place with an average of 7.38 seconds, while Ao Nogami secured third place on the podium with an average of 7.46 seconds.

The 3x3 results throughout the afternoon reflected an exceptionally deep field of Japanese speed cubing talent. Ao Nogami set the fastest single solve of the entire tournament during the 3x3x3 Cube rounds with a blistering 5.84. Shu Ogawa produced a rapid 6.55 single on his way to a 7.89 average, while Kounosuke Udou laid down a 6.62 single and an 8.21 average. Takumi Kawazoe also impressed across the event, notching a 6.97 single and a 7.30 average, and Taiwan's Yi-Fan Wu delivered a 7.24 single alongside a 7.58 average.

Beyond the championship finals, the heart of the tournament emerged in the individual progress of competitors pushing their boundaries. Kenshin Asai entered two events and achieved a career-best finish of 18th place in the 3x3x3 Cube, lowering his personal best average to 7.70 seconds, which was 17.1 percent faster than his previous standard of 9.29. Asai also logged his first ever attempt in the 5x5x5 Cube, finishing in 1:29.45. Meanwhile, Trần Anh Sơn delivered one of the day's biggest leaps, dropping his 5x5x5 Cube personal best down to 1:04.10, an outstanding 34.7 percent improvement over his prior mark of 1:38.17.

Several other dedicated solvers expanded their repertoires by tackling the demanding 5x5x5 Cube for the very first time on the official stage. Haruto Tatsuta took on two events and recorded his first official 5x5x5 Cube result with a mark of 1:21.43, while Go Nakamura posted a time of 1:23.41 in his initial attempt. Shota Ishii tackled both disciplines, registering a first 5x5x5 Cube time of 1:32.21 while simultaneously trimming his 3x3x3 Cube personal best by 4.2 percent to 9.20 seconds. Yousef Salib put up a debut time of 1:33.38, Mitsuki Fujii completed his first attempt in 2:20.62, and Kazuhiko Kusano rounded out the new event milestones with a time of 2:43.01.

The 5x5x5 Cube event saw 51 competitors take to the tables across 2 rounds of intense problem-solving. While Ivan Li Ka Leong captured the title, the battle for the remaining podium positions came down to a matter of hundredths of a second. Yi-Fan Wu secured second place with an average of 51.31 seconds, holding off Ao Nogami, who took third place with a 51.36 average. Nogami's performance earned him two individual podium finishes across the tournament, highlighting his versatility in both small and large cubes.

Across the two official disciplines at Kanto Summer PM 2025, podium places were distributed across three different territories, with Japan earning four places, Hong Kong taking one, and Taiwan taking one. From elite single solves dipping into the five-second range to foundational personal bests across the field, the gathering highlighted the continuous drive for progression that defines modern competitive cubing as participants look ahead to the next chapter of the season.
