Daniel Wallin Dominates Across Events as Kanonkuben 2024 Electrifies SwedenEnglish
Inside Folkets Hus in Åkers Styckebruk, Sweden, the rapid click of plastic mechanisms echoed across the competition tables as 39 competitors gathered on March 2 and 3 for a full weekend of tournament speedcubing. Over two demanding days, the field tackled 15 different events and 30 rounds, testing every discipline from traditional twisting puzzles to complex memory challenges. The atmosphere combined quiet concentration at the blindfolded stations with high-energy racing across the shorter formats, bringing the cubing competition to life from the opening turns on Saturday morning.
The standout story of Kanonkuben 2024 was the sweeping mastery displayed by Daniel Wallin. The Swedish solver claimed victory in five distinct events, establishing an unmatched presence across both standard and specialty puzzles. In the Skewb competition, Wallin secured first place with a winning average of 3.70 seconds and a best single of 3.01. He matched that precision in Megaminx, taking gold with a 40.01-second average and a single of 38.13 seconds, demonstrating seamless execution on the twelve-sided puzzle.
Wallin proved utterly untouchable when solving without sight. Blindfolded events require complete memorisation before executing moves beneath a blindfold, and Wallin swept all three categories on the schedule. He captured the 3x3x3 Blindfolded title with a single of 34.13 seconds, ahead of Cham J. Chambers at 45.27 seconds and Niklas Aasen Eliasson at 55.65 seconds. In 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Wallin took the top step with a winning average of 2:14.05 and a single of 1:51.20, while Chambers earned second in 5:17.75 and Helmer Ewert finished third in 6:23.17. Wallin completed his blindfolded sweep by winning 5x5x5 Blindfolded with a 4:28.65 single, leading Ewert at 13:41.00.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a full roster of 39 entrants through three competitive rounds to determine the official 3x3 results. Helmer Ewert delivered a composed performance in the final, taking victory with a winning average of 8.81 seconds and a best single of 8.16. Leo Lindqvist claimed the runner-up spot with an average of 9.05 seconds, closely followed by Cham J. Chambers in third place with a 9.09-second average. Ewert also captured the Square-1 event, averaging 8.11 seconds with a best single of 7.13 across two rounds.
Beyond the main podium races, several solvers marked notable milestones throughout the WCA competition. Sam Lindström tackled four events, cutting his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 10.61 seconds—a massive 44.1 percent improvement—while also recording a first Clock attempt of 31.01 seconds and a first 3x3x3 Cube solve of 1:04.70. Eric Barrud Ulf improved his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 39 percent to 9.97 seconds and registered a 49.64 single on the 3x3x3 Cube. David Zazzi reduced his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 37.7 percent to 4.84 seconds and completed his first official Skewb attempt in 18.64 seconds. Tristan Grabski slashed 33.9 percent off his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best with a 46.97, lowered his 2x2x2 mark by 25.1 percent to 3.20, and cut his 3x3x3 Cube time by 15.8 percent to 15.48.
Other competitors took on fresh challenges with impressive determination. Malte Glaumann entered five events, logging his first 5x5x5 Cube attempt in 2:08.13 while improving his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 16 percent to 3.68 and his 4x4x4 Cube best by 14.1 percent to 1:11.37. Ludvig Held took on 10 events, capturing a 10th-place finish in 2x2x2 Cube alongside first official attempts in Square-1 at 35.51, 3x3x3 One-Handed at 29.98, and Pyraminx at 7.97. Valter Lärnestad registered a first Clock attempt of 41.85 seconds, trimmed 12.3 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to reach 30.54, and set a 6.21 mark in 2x2x2 Cube. Lukas Lambis Örtenberg logged his first 2x2x2 Cube attempt at 14.45 seconds and cut 10.2 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube time with a new best of 54.63.
Shorter events brought exceptional speed, led by Norway solver Niklas Aasen Eliasson. Eliasson captured three event victories, winning the 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.19 average and a 1.45 single, and later recording a 1.25 single and 1.70 average during the rounds. In Clock, Eliasson secured first place with a 3.57 average ahead of Chambers at 5.61 and Erland Flodman at 6.68. Eliasson also triumphed in Pyraminx with an average of 2.60 seconds, outpacing Wallin at 3.78 and Ewert at 3.93.

In total, Swedish competitors secured 28 podium finishes, alongside 10 for the United Kingdom and 7 for Norway.
The 2024 speed cubing weekend showcased remarkable versatility across classic puzzles and big cubes alike, demonstrating the skill required to manipulate a Rubik's Cube at international speed standards. As the final rounds wrapped up at Folkets Hus, the extensive variety of events confirmed the enduring appeal of competitive solving across Sweden.
