Mean-of-Three Drama and Precision Solving Define Breda Open 2026English
Inside the spacious hall of the Gemeentelijk Sportcentrum Breda, the distinctive rhythm of clacking plastic and the tap of electronic timers set the pulse for the weekend. Dozens of stations operated side by side as judges monitored each solve, while the warm atmosphere inside Breda, Netherlands, welcomed enthusiasts for two days of intense competition across April 18 and April 19. With nine disciplines and 16 scheduled rounds, the gathering attracted an energetic crowd of 156 entrants eager to test their speed against the clock in this major 2026 speedcubing gathering.
The inherent tension of a mean-of-three format was on full display in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded final, where the cost of a single mistake is absolute. Without the luxury of five solves to trim the fastest and slowest times, competitors faced severe pressure during their memorisation and execution phases. Olivier Vos demonstrated remarkable consistency under these unforgiving conditions, putting together three clean solves to claim victory with a winning mean of 26.24 seconds, highlighted by a rapid single of 18.64 seconds. Ivo Stoutjesdijk secured the second spot with a 20.49 second single, while Sebastiano Tronto of Italy completed the podium with a 26.59 effort.
The classic Rubik's Cube brought out the largest field of the weekend, with 135 solvers battling through three successive rounds. Andrey Che dominated the premier division, securing the top spot in the 3x3 results by posting a winning average of 6.42 seconds and a best single solve of 5.84 seconds. Che proved to be a formidable force across multiple events at Breda Open 2026, capturing two additional titles. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Che posted a winning mark of 28.05 seconds, edging out Haluk Ulkusal of Romania who took second in 28.27 seconds, and Olivier Vos in 29.73 seconds.
Che continued his dominant run in 3x3x3 One-Handed, securing his third gold of the weekend with a 10.45 second average, ahead of Kymo Hendriks with 11.18 seconds and David Akerboom with 13.89 seconds. Meanwhile, the short-format speed cubing events delivered blistering tempos across all rounds. Twan Wieringa took the 2x2x2 Cube title in emphatic fashion, compiling a 1.17 second winning average along with a sub-one single of 0.98 seconds, outperforming Luca Dalton of Argentina and Hugo Goudriaan. Jonathan Plug captured the Pyraminx crown with a 1.69 second average, finishing ahead of Wieringa and Florine Zuur.
In the rotational puzzle events at Breda Open 2026, Mattheo de Wit captured victory in Skewb with a 3.33 second average, leading Elias Malomgre of Belgium and Ivo Stoutjesdijk. Stoutjesdijk was not to be denied his own gold, however, prevailing over a 55-competitor field in Megaminx with a winning average of 45.36 seconds and a 43.20 single, followed on the podium by De Wit and Zuur. In Square-1, Vincent Chan claimed the title with a swift 7.70 second average, outpacing Stoutjesdijk who took second with 9.43 seconds, and Phoebe Dusil of the Czech Republic.
Beyond the podium battles, significant milestones highlighted the weekend across the main stage. Luna Bodegom registered a remarkable improvement in the 3x3x3 Cube, lowering their personal best single to 23.17 seconds, which was 64 percent faster than their previous mark of 1:04.31, while also logging a first attempt in Pyraminx of 21.51 and 2x2x2 Cube of 16.21. Ruben Zuijderduijn tackled eight distinct disciplines, achieving a Skewb personal best of 5.89 seconds that improved on their previous mark by 58.2 percent, trimming their Square-1 best down to 52.93 seconds, and recording a first Pyraminx solve of 9.09 seconds. Sjors de Greef posted a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 5.12 seconds, 39.9 percent faster than their past standard, and recorded first attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 1:54.90 and Skewb at 19.86 seconds.
The depth of participation continued with Bart Nagtzaam, who contested eight events at this WCA competition, earning a personal high finish of 28th place in Square-1 alongside debut results of 4.83 in 2x2x2 Cube, 34.37 in Square-1, and 1:10.67 in 4x4x4 Cube. Sophie Marie Beusenberg took on five disciplines, reaching 34th place in Square-1 and posting first attempts of 12.69 in Skewb, 6.19 in 2x2x2 Cube, and 55.81 in Square-1. Alexander Storchevyi completed five events, finishing 64th in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an initial time of 1:10.05, while also recording first marks in Skewb at 16.16 seconds and Pyraminx at 11.99 seconds.
The overall medal standings reflected strong international participation, with the host nation claiming 18 podium positions, Russia earning three, Romania two, and Belgium, Argentina, and Italy earning one apiece. Across every category, the high standard of preparation was obvious from the opening heat to the final solves of Sunday evening. With intense rounds completed and personal bests established, Breda Open 2026 concluded as a vibrant showcase of tactical focus and technical mastery, setting an inspiring benchmark for competitors preparing for the upcoming season of cubing competition fixtures.
