Big Cubes Athens 2024 Delivers Masterful Showcases in Greek CapitalEnglish

Joel Cetra delivered the defining run of the weekend in Athens, Greece, capturing three titles across the larger puzzles to stamp his authority on the tournament. While speed events at a Rubik's Cube gathering demand immediate, rapid execution under the ticking timer, larger mechanisms demand sustained composure and rigorous mechanical planning. That calculated patience was fully evident over March 30 to March 31, 2024, at THE RUBICON escape rooms, where Big Cubes Athens 2024 brought 48 competitors together across four heavyweight categories and eight rounds of intense play.

The German contingent set the standard early and kept control of the podium across every single division. Over the course of the weekend, German solvers collected 11 podium spots, leaving just a single podium finish for Poland. Fans tracking regional speedcubing rankings saw familiar names push the pace, with Cetra leading the charge in three finals and Elias Fischer providing fierce opposition across the board. The event highlighted how demanding multi-layered puzzles are compared to standard speed cubing events, demanding physical endurance alongside sharp algorithms.

In the 4x4x4 Cube, Elias Fischer took the top step on the podium with a winning average of 33.69 seconds, just edging out Poland's Łukasz Dubicki who registered a 33.86 average. Fischer's best single in the final reached 33.10 seconds, while his earlier round performances featured an outstanding 29.26 single and a 32.52 average. Joel Cetra claimed the third podium spot with a 35.04 average, having logged a 29.33 single and 34.90 average elsewhere in the bracket. A competitive field of 46 competitors took part in the event across two rounds.

Cetra found his absolute peak form as the puzzles grew larger, sweeping the remaining three categories in commanding style. In the 5x5x5 Cube, he secured victory with a winning average of 59.39 seconds, backed by a best single of 56.12. Elias Fischer finished as runner-up with an average of 1:01.55, and Linus Buck took third place with 1:03.70 among a field of 40 entrants. It was a complete showcase of precision turning, giving Cetra his first victory of the gathering.

The 6x6x6 Cube saw Cetra double his gold medal count, taking first place with an average of 1:51.79 and a best single of 1:49.41 across two rounds featuring 32 competitors. Fischer again finished in second place with a 1:57.18 average, while Buck earned third at 1:57.33. Moving to the 7x7x7 Cube, Cetra completed the sweep with a 2:57.76 winning average and a 2:51.31 best single, leading Buck with 3:02.12 and Fischer with 3:08.68 in the 27-person field, ensuring Big Cubes Athens 2024 remained a masterclass in large-format solving.

Beyond the championship tier, the heart of the cubing competition lived in the massive personal milestones achieved across the board. Alexandros Eleftheriadis cut his 4x4x4 Cube personal best to 58.87 seconds from 1:52.68, an enormous improvement of 47.8 percent, and also registered his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a mark of 2:34.57 while securing 28th place in the four-layer event. Joanna Dubicka took on all four events, slashing 47.2 percent off her 7x7x7 Cube best down to 9:04.58 from 17:11.00, improving her 4x4x4 Cube best to 1:23.89, and completing her first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 5:04.56. Theofanis Biskitzis took on four events, finishing 22nd in 4x4x4 Cube, posting a 5x5x5 Cube personal best of 1:50.73 to improve by 31.3 percent, and logging his first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube in 3:42.73 and first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube in 5:59.55.

Linus Buck posted a single of 33.90 seconds and an average of 35.18, while Polish contender Łukasz Dubicki recorded a 35.11 single and a 38.95 average. For the home nation, Greek solvers made substantial impacts on the timing sheets, led by Vasilis Prigkos with a 34.68 single and 35.93 average, Iasonas Mylonas with a 34.34 single and 36.91 average, Panos Gkotsis with a 33.60 single and 41.39 average, Zois Lefkidis with a 36.54 single and 39.06 average, Ioannis Rovatsos with a 42.12 single and 44.33 average, and Nikolas Belalidis with a 39.71 single and 44.60 average.

While standard 3x3 results often command the spotlight on a tournament calendar, this WCA competition put the focus squarely on complexity, endurance, and deep technical execution. Across two days in the Greek capital, Big Cubes Athens 2024 demonstrated the immense focus required to navigate the largest layers in the sport. With dramatic performances at the top and breakthrough personal milestones throughout the order, the competition concluded as a defining highlight of the 2024 season.
