Youth and Rapid Progress Take Center Stage at Barby Cube 2023English
The Salle des Fêtes buzzed with quiet intensity as timers started and puzzle faces turned at blinding speed. Tables across the hall were covered with mats, displays, and an assortment of geometric puzzles, setting the stage for an intense weekend of competition in Barby, France. Across three full days from April 8 to April 10, the gathering demonstrated the vibrant momentum of modern speedcubing, drawing ninety competitors who tackled fifteen different events over thirty packed rounds.
The headline 3x3 results at Barby Cube 2023 delivered exceptional quality right down to the final solves of the classic Rubik's Cube. Juliette Sébastien captured the premier title with a winning average of 6.58 seconds, anchored by a best single of 5.72 seconds across three competitive rounds. Mathis Luc secured the second step on the podium with a 7.64 average, while Nicolas Gertner Kilian followed closely behind in third place at 7.79 seconds to round out the all-French podium in the main event.
Sébastien also showcased remarkable versatility across very different formats throughout the weekend. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, Sébastien earned the top spot with a 10.32 average and a 9.43 single. That form carried straight into the Megaminx final, where Sébastien claimed victory with a 40.27 average, finishing ahead of Rémi Perrin who logged a 45.31 average for second, and Ilona Ansel who took third with 49.33 seconds.
Mid-sized cube events were dominated by Abdelhak Kaddour, who earned a pair of commanding victories. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Kaddour took first place with an average of 28.01 seconds and a best single of 23.63, ahead of Juliette Sébastien in second at 29.12 and Peter Grassard in third at 32.15. Kaddour followed that up by winning the 5x5x5 Cube with a 51.38 average, with Switzerland's Alwin Rölz taking second at 52.91 and Grassard securing another third-place finish with 55.25.
Swiss standout Alwin Rölz proved unbeatable on the larger hardware and dynamic puzzles.
