Choi Edges Dunagan by Hundredth as 2x2 Field Drives Agoura Cubing Returns 2024English
The gymnasium floor at Lindero Canyon Middle School hummed with focused energy as 117 competitors took their places at the solving stations on June 15, 2024. Stacks of puzzle covers stood beside electronic timers while parents and fellow solvers watched every move across twelve rounds of play. Set in Agoura Hills, California, USA, the gathering brought together competitors across five distinct events. The atmosphere carried the distinct rhythm of a premier cubing competition, where mechanical precision meets absolute concentration across hundreds of individual solves.
The 2x2x2 Cube division generated an exceptional level of fast times and competitive milestones throughout the single-day schedule. Across three intense rounds, ten different competitors delivered personal marks that reshaped their standings. Nancy Liu of the United States captured the overall title with a winning average of 1.43 seconds, powered by a 1.26 single in the final round and an earlier 1.18 benchmark. Kyeongmin Choi pushed the standard right alongside her, logging a 1.21 single and a 1.42 average on his way to second place with a 1.55 final average.
The flurry of quick 2x2 marks extended deep into the roster at Agoura Cubing Returns 2024. Jack Flynn Stewart locked up third place with a 2.20 final average after uncorking a remarkable 0.93 single. Dominic Shoji registered a 1.57 single and 2.38 average, while Elijah Brown marked a 2.21 single and 2.44 average. Brendyn Dunagan posted a 1.32 single and 2.64 average, followed by Robert Kagramanyan at 2.09, Shane Grogan at 2.28, Gavin Sillifant at 2.81, and Emil Lazaryev at 3.09, demonstrating the remarkable depth across the bracket.
While the miniature puzzle saw rapid marks, the classic Rubik's Cube brought one of the closest finishes of the year in southern California speedcubing. Kyeongmin Choi secured the 3x3x3 Cube title with a 6.97 winning average and a best single of 6.59. He edged out Brendyn Dunagan by the slimmest margin possible, as Dunagan settled for second place with a 6.98 average. Elijah Brown completed the podium in third place with a 7.50 mark, concluding an exciting set of 3x3 results from an initial field of 113 entrants.
Away from the main stage podiums, several competitors logged breakthrough performances that highlighted their growth on the official circuit. Vsevolod Rozanov turned in the biggest drop of the day, cutting his 2x2x2 personal best by 66 percent down to 4.07 seconds while also lowering his 4x4x4 Cube mark by 14.7 percent to 54.59. Damian Liu-Ruiz chopped 52.7 percent off his Clock standard to reach 15.75 seconds, improved his 4x4x4 Cube time by 5.7 percent to 50.70, and took on his first ever attempt at Pyraminx with a 9.52 result. Christian Kimm lowered his 2x2x2 Cube best by 48.9 percent to 3.38 seconds and entered the 4x4x4 Cube for the first time with a 1:32.40 clocking. The larger puzzles and specialty events produced equally compelling battles throughout the afternoon in Agoura Hills. Brendyn Dunagan claimed the 4x4x4 Cube victory with a 29.65 average and a best single of 28.15, leading Jack Flynn Stewart at 32.04 and Elijah Brown at 33.61.
